Mangaluru, Jun 4: Indian Metereological department (IMD) has informed that the south west monsoon has entered Karnataka state on Sunday. However, weather experts say that the entry of monsoon is not intense.
When the clouds that bring rainfall arrived in Kerala from Indian Ocean they did not have the intensity. Though monsoon entered Kerala a few days back there was no heavy rainfall. Monsoon has entered Karnataka on June 2. However, it is likely to enter the coastal region in full force from June 5.
Weather expert Sai Shekhar says, “In the last five years the onset of monsoon has been improper. It used to lose its speed due to cyclone and low pressure. In earlier days it was usual for schools to begin after summer holidays and the entry of monsoon at the same time. However, this year, though the schools have begun, heavy rainfall is yet to lash anywhere.”
The pre-monsoon period is already over in Karnataka. From the period of March to May, various parts of the state received heavy rainfall. As the pre-monsoon showers lashed in copious amounts in DK and Udupi districts drinking water woes have been resolved.
The average pre-monsoon rainfall is expected to be 237 mm in DK distict. However, this year the district has already received 326 mm of rainfall during the period. In Udupi against the expected 199 mm of rainfall, the district has received 257 mm of rainfall.
Last year, the pre-monsoon rainfall was very weak in both the districts. There was a rainfall deficit of 51% and 73% in DK and Udupi districts respectively.
