Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Jun 13: Karnataka is at the forefront of adopting environment-friendly electric vehicles. The Energy Department has devised a plan to double the number of EV charging stations in the state, with 171 new stations being established under Mescom's jurisdiction.

Currently, there are 57 EV charging stations within Mescom limits, including 17 in Dakshina Kannada, 17 in Shivamogga, and 11 in Chikkamagaluru. The tender process is underway for establishing 171 additional EV stations.

Karnataka presently has a total of 5,130 EV charging stations. According to a directive from Energy Minister K. J. George, Karnataka aims to become an EV hub. The Energy Ministry is planning a project to implement this vision, with Bescom nominated as the nodal agency. Locations for new EV charging centers have been identified throughout the state.

Under the PPP model, 1,190 new EV charging centers and 2,380 EV chargers are being established across the 31 districts of Karnataka. The Energy Department is covering the fundamental infrastructure costs.

Within Mescom limits, a proposal was submitted for 190 EV charging stations. Currently, 171 locations have been identified: 79 in Dakshina Kannada, 22 in Udupi, 50 in Shivamogga, and 20 in Chikkamagaluru.

The Energy Department is also working to facilitate smooth travel for EV owners on highways. The number of EV charging points on state and national highways is being significantly increased.

True. Charging takes a lot of time, the value of the vehicle is nearly equal to the value of the battery, chances of fire are more. In China, many EV are abandoned and places are known as EV graveyards. Battery requires rare earth metals, (eg Lithium)which in future may or may not be available.

Wonderful response by Mescom to Nitin Gadkari's request. Shortly, there will be more EV charging stations than Petrol Pumps in our developed country.

The main source of production of electricity is nonrenewable so even if electric................. @ Monty Dotor, Hydropower currently is the largest source of renewable energy in the electricity sector. And the EV charging stations are mainly run on electricity produced by Hydropower or may be atomic/nuclear energy share in power generation. According to my understanding such sources of power generation are a free of any atmospheric pollution like fuel, coal or wood burning. I am not an expert but my understanding may be limited.

The main source of production of electricity is non renewable so even if electric vehicles are used pollution will still be there at production level. We have to switch to renewable ( already started in a big way in many states) only then the purpose will be served.
