Danseuse Hamsa, daughter of Veerappa Moily dies of illness

Udupi/Bengaluru, Jun 30: Hamsa Moily, daughter of former chief minister and forner union minister M Veerappa Moily, breathed her last on Sunday, June 30 in Bengaluru.

Hamsa Moily (52) was suffering from illness recently.

Hamsa Moily was a performer and dancer with extensive training in Bharatanatyam, in both the Vazuvoor School and the Kalakshetra School of Bharatanatyam. She has given a number of performances in India and abroad, as a soloist and as part of a group under Padmini Ravi.

Over the past several years Hamsa had been sharing her dance experiences with children and actors, under organizations like Gillo, Mumbai and The Kishkindi Trust, Anegundi, Hampi, among others.

Her choreography work includes ‘Sri Ramayana Mahanveshanam’ - performances based on M Veerappa Moily’s book; ‘Bhavana’, a Bharatanatyam dance/theatre production on the theme of adoption, written by Sushma Veerappa; stage plays ‘Kurukshetra se kargil tak’ and ‘Bidaru Mandala’ directed by M S Sathyu.

She has acted in theatre productions like ‘Agnipata’ and ‘Chitrapata Ramayana’ directed by B Jayashree, ‘Smashana Kurukshetra’ directed by M S Sathyu, ‘The Vagina Monologues’ and ‘Kamla’ directed by Preetam Koilpillai. She has also acted, directed and choreographed, ‘Chinta’ a play in English, based on Mahashweta Devi’s story.

She has acted in a period Tamil feature film, ‘Shringaram’, based on the lives of Devadasis (temple dancers) of the 1920’s; short film ‘A portrait of a dancer’, directed by Ruchi Bakshi, produced by Channel V.

Her work with Gillo includes choreography for their plays ‘Kyun-Kyun Ladki’ and 'She-He-Shey.'

Hamsa had also written a collection of poems called 'The Homecoming’, published by Rupa Publications.

She was also a practitioner of Yoga.
