Young woman dies, friend critical after high-speed crash on Mumbai’s coastal road

Daijiworld Media Release - Mumbai

Mumbai, Feb 10: A 19-year-old woman lost her life while her 22-year-old friend suffered critical injuries after their speeding car crashed into a divider on the Coastal Road near Haji Ali on Saturday night.

The accident occurred around 8:05 pm when Sanyam Sakla, driving a Swift at high speed, lost control near a curve, causing the vehicle to swerve abruptly before colliding with the divider and overturning. While Sakla is unconscious and undergoing treatment in the ICU at Breach Candy Hospital, his passenger, Gargi Vitthal Chate, succumbed to severe head injuries despite medical efforts.

Chate, a first-year student from a South Mumbai college, hailed from Nashik. She had met Sakla in Dadar earlier that evening before he offered to drop her home. Based on a police complaint, an FIR has been registered against Sakla under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act.

This marks the second fatal accident on the Coastal Road. Last year, a worker was killed in a hit-and-run involving a BMW near the same stretch. The police are awaiting Sakla’s recovery to record his statement and further probe the incident.
