Porvorim, Feb 22: In a major crackdown on illegal cricket betting, Goa Police have busted a betting syndicate operating from Pilerne, Porvorim, and arrested three individuals from Gujarat. The racket was allegedly placing bets on the Champions Trophy match between India and Bangladesh, officials confirmed.

According to Police Inspector Rahul Parab, the police received credible intelligence on the night of February 20 about an illegal betting operation being conducted from a rented bungalow. Acting swiftly, a special police team raided the premises and apprehended the accused.

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

• Maksud Modan (28) – Resident of Botad, Gujarat

• Aasifbhai Jiyaudeenbhai (25) – Resident of Botad, Gujarat

• Rizvan Bhash (20) – Resident of Rajkot, Gujarat

During the raid, police seized betting-related equipment valued at Rs 1,10,000, including:

• Four mobile phones

• One laptop

• Routers and other electronic devices

A case has been registered under Sections 3 and 4 of the Goa, Daman, and Diu Public Gambling Act. The raid was conducted under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Vishwesh Karpe and Superintendent of Police (North) Akshat Kaushal.

The operation was led by Police Inspector Rahul Parab, assisted by Police Sub-Inspectors (PSI) Sitaram Malik and Arun Shirodkar, along with Constables Mahadev Naik, Akash Naik, Nitesh Gawde, and Siddhesh Naik.

Police sources suggest that this betting racket may be linked to a larger inter-state network, and further arrests are likely as investigations continue.

In a separate incident earlier this month, Chandkheda Police in Gujarat busted an online cricket betting racket operating at Narendra Modi Stadium, arresting five individuals. Law enforcement authorities recovered cash and mobile phones worth Rs 1,80,750 during the operation.

Illegal betting syndicates in Gujarat often operate across state lines, using online platforms and encrypted communication methods to evade detection. Law enforcement agencies are continuing their efforts to monitor and dismantle these networks.

Further arrests are expected as investigations progress.
