Mangaluru, Jul 5: The state government has issued an order to newly introduce English medium classes alongside other mediums in 4,134 government primary schools from the academic year 2025–26. Accordingly, approval has been granted to start English medium classes in 115 schools in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district.
From 2019 to 2024, the government had approved bilingual education in a total of 120 schools in the district. Recently, three more schools have been added, bringing the total to 123 schools offering bilingual medium instruction.

These schools will have separate classes for Kannada and English mediums. Teachers will conduct classes in the medium chosen by the students.
In the district, 48 schools were approved for bilingual medium in 2019–20, 34 in 2020–21, and 38 in 2024–25. With the newly granted approval, an additional 115 schools have been included. In total, there are 892 government schools in the district, including both lower and higher primary schools.
Just this Thursday, the government granted permission to start English medium classes in addition to Kannada medium in 4,134 government primary schools across the state.
This time, government primary schools, Karnataka Public Schools, and PM Shri Schools have been selected to implement the English medium. In each taluk, the top 15 schools with the highest student enrollment have been considered based on descending order of strength.
Bilingual medium classes will begin in 20 schools in Bantwal, 16 in Beltangady, 15 each in Mangaluru North, Moodbidri, and Sullia, 16 in Mangaluru South, and 18 in Puttur.
