Mumbai, Sep 18: Shiv Sena (UBT) has strongly condemned the defacement of Meenatai Thackeray’s statue at Shivaji Park, labelling it an emotional assault on millions of followers of the late Bal Thackeray’s legacy. Party spokesperson Anand Dubey described the act — smearing oil paint on the statue — as "deeply unfortunate" and demanded strict action against the accused, identified via CCTV footage as Upendra Pawaskar.
Speaking to reporters, Dubey said Meenatai Thackeray is not merely a historical figure but a revered symbol of motherhood and faith for Shiv Sainiks. "This is more than vandalism — it’s a wound to the emotions of countless supporters. The government must act decisively. In an era of CCTV surveillance, such actions reflect gross negligence. No mother should be dishonoured,” he stated.

Dubey urged law enforcement to enhance security around statues and politically significant memorials, calling the accused’s behaviour “a reflection of a diseased mindset.”
On a broader political note, Dubey also addressed the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board's plans for nationwide protests after the Supreme Court declined to stay the amended Waqf Act. He appealed for calm and legal patience, saying, “A detailed hearing has taken place. The matter is still under judicial consideration, and the community should await the final verdict. Agitations are unwarranted when the process is already unfolding through proper legal channels.”
Dubey didn't hold back when asked about the recent controversy over an AI-generated video involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother, which was later removed following a Patna High Court directive to the Congress.
“No mother — whether Heeraben, Sonia Gandhi, or Meenatai Thackeray — should be insulted. Politics must retain a sense of decency. Congress made a mistake by posting that video, and the court rightly intervened. But the Prime Minister, too, should lead by example and refrain from personal comments about others' mothers. Respect must be universal — be it for a labourer’s mother or the PM’s.”
On PM Modi receiving an outpouring of birthday wishes from global leaders and citizens, Dubey offered a pointed remark: “Greetings are symbolic, but real meaning comes from governance. Are jobs being created? Are farmers benefitting? Wishing the Prime Minister is protocol, but the real measure of leadership lies in progress, not popularity.”
Shiv Sena (UBT)’s firm stance comes amid a politically charged atmosphere in Maharashtra, with symbolic gestures and public perception playing a significant role as parties gear up for the upcoming elections.
