Gurugram, Oct 7: Men often tend to ignore health check-ups until symptoms become unbearable, and prostate health is one area that is frequently overlooked, warns Dr. Vikram Barua Kaushik, HOD and Consultant Urologist at Manipal Hospital, Gurugram.
The prostate, a small walnut-sized gland located below the bladder, plays a crucial role in producing seminal fluid. While most men dismiss early warning signs as part of aging, ignoring them can sometimes lead to serious complications.

Globally, prostate cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer among men, with 1.47 million new cases and around 3,97,000 deaths reported in 2022. Though not all prostate issues indicate cancer, early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.
Warning signs men should not ignore:
• Frequent nighttime urination may indicate prostate swelling or irritation.
• Difficulty starting or stopping urination could signal pressure on the urinary tract.
• Weak urine flow, dribbling, or changes in stream are red flags.
• Presence of blood in urine requires urgent medical attention.
• Pain in the pelvic area, lower back, or during ejaculation may point to inflammation or infection.
Preventive measures and lifestyle tips:
• Balanced diet and hydration: Include fruits, vegetables, and fiber-rich foods; limit red and processed meat. Adequate water intake keeps the urinary system healthy.
• Regular exercise: Helps maintain hormonal balance and prevents obesity, a risk factor for prostate enlargement and cancer.
• Limit alcohol, caffeine, and avoid smoking: These substances irritate the bladder and may worsen symptoms.
• Routine medical check-ups: PSA tests and exams are recommended after age 50 or earlier if there is a family history. Prompt attention to urinary issues can prevent progression.
For confirmed prostate cancer, treatment options include surgery (radical prostatectomy), radiation therapy, and for advanced or slow-growing cases, hormone therapy or chemotherapy.
“Men often joke about health issues as ‘just age catching up,’ but the body sends signals that should not be ignored. Early diagnosis is key to maintaining health, peace of mind, and quality of life,” Dr Kaushik added.
Early attention to prostate health can make a significant difference, ensuring both longevity and well-being.
