Carmel School, Mangaluru organises farewell programme in honour of Hazel Rodrigues

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 30: The Carmel family gathered in an ambience of warmth and gratitude on October 27 to honour Hazel Rodrigues, who completed 29 years of devoted service in the teaching profession. The day was filled with emotion, reflection, and appreciation as the school community celebrated a teacher whose life was a beautiful blend of perseverance, wisdom, and elegance.

The occasion unfolded through two memorable gatherings — a morning assembly by the students and an afternoon felicitation by her colleagues. The morning prayer exuded serenity as students, holding a light, a pair of wings, and a feather, whispered prayers of gratitude for their dear teacher. These symbols reflected enlightenment, guidance, and the spirit of freedom she inspired. Later, during the afternoon invocation, the staff offered thanks to the Almighty for blessing Carmel with a teacher whose quiet commitment and gentle manner left an enduring impression.

A welcome dance by the little ones lit up the stage with innocence and joy, setting the tone for the day. Sr Rosevera, the principal, in her thoughtful address, praised Hazel’s calm disposition, radiant smile, and steadfast fairness towards all. She admired her as an exemplary teacher- composed and firm when needed, yet ever kind and understanding - one who carried out her duties with self-respect and loveliness, leaving no room for complaint or bias.

A touch of nostalgia filled the hall with a captivating Shadow Play titled 'The life and journey of teacher Hazel'. It portrayed moments of laughter, devotion, and compassion that had coloured her teaching years. Old students, through touching video messages, fondly recalled her encouragement and familiar assurance, “That’s okay, dear, try again.” The lively dance sequence 'Retro to Metro' charmingly showcased her seamless transition from chalkboard teaching to digital learning, reflecting her readiness to embrace change with enthusiasm and poise.

Expressions of admiration followed from Reuben of grade 4 and Sheryl of grade 8, who spoke fondly of their beloved teacher’s kindness, patience, and cheerful nature that made learning a joy. Cynthia Renjal, her colleague and childhood acquaintance, reminisced about their growing-up years together, describing Hazel as a person of gaiety, vivacity, sharp memory, and a sublime soul whose presence has always brightened the lives around her. A lovely dance presented by her colleagues added colour and rhythm to the afternoon, symbolizing friendship and happiness.

The honouring ceremony formed the highlight of the celebration. Sr Rosevera, Dr Sr Prem, Sr Premal, student leaders, and teacher representatives adorned the honouree with a shawl, garland, crown, fruit basket, memento, and pendant — each symbolizing indebtedness and appreciativeness. Alice read the citation that beautifully captured her journey marked by concern, and brilliance. Prateek, her son, expressed deep thankfulness to the school for arranging such a touching and memorable programme.

In her address of thanks, Hazel Rodrigues spoke with sincere appreciation to God, the management, her colleagues, and her students who made her journey meaningful. She encouraged the children to lend helping hands, to love and respect their parents and elders, and to believe in themselves. She also thanked Sr Rosevera for her thoughtfulness and creativity in planning the celebration.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Sr Prem and head boy Prishon, followed by the School Anthem, which echoed through the hall like a prayer of blessing.

The event was compered with confidence — in the morning session by Shirtsti P Shetty, Sheetal, Dhanvi Gopal, Anshika, Samyukta P, and Ramona Sanctis, and in the afternoon session by Hazel Lobo and Mable D’Souza.
