Man held for blackmailing woman, abetting suicide in Mumbai

Mumbai, Nov 26: Mumbai Police have arrested a man for allegedly driving a woman to suicide by blackmailing her with morphed obscene photographs and repeatedly threatening to circulate them on social media.

The victim, a resident of Goregaon, had been in frequent contact with the accused, Sanjayraj Vishwakarma. Police said the two often spoke for long hours on WhatsApp and over phone calls. Though her parents had advised her to distance herself from him, she continued to stay in touch.

Over the past few weeks, the young woman had reportedly been under intense mental stress. When confronted by her mother, she revealed that Vishwakarma had taken her to a friend’s event and clicked several photos of her, later editing them into obscene images. He allegedly used these morphed pictures to blackmail her for money, threatening to make them viral.

Despite giving him money multiple times, the harassment continued. The woman had even approached the police earlier, after which officers warned the accused to stay away from her.

However, the ongoing intimidation allegedly pushed her into severe depression. On November 15, she died by suicide, hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence.

Following her death, the family approached the Goregaon police once again. The accused was arrested last week, and a case has been registered against him for extortion, blackmail, threatening to circulate obscene photos, and abetment of suicide.
