Mangaluru: Undertrial prisoner assaulted, threatened by fellow inmates

Mangaluru, Dec 17: An undertrial prisoner lodged at the Mangaluru district prison after being arrested under the NDPS Act was allegedly assaulted and threatened by fellow inmates.

The victim has been identified as Ahmad Shabith, while the accused inmates are Moyiddin Faraz, Arafath Ali, Paresh, Mohammed Mustafa and Safwan.

Shabith, one of the accused in an MDMA supply case in the city, was arrested by the Kankanady city police and later remanded to judicial custody by the second additional district and sessions court. On Dec 14, at around 5.20 pm, he was lodged in Room No. 2 of Section ‘A’ of the prison.

At around 5.55 pm, Mohammed Harshad, another undertrial prisoner from Room No. 4 of the same section, was taking Shabith from Room No. 2 to Room No. 4 on the upper floor, when the other undertrial prisoners allegedly assaulted him and issued life threats.

On-duty prison staff intervened and shifted Shabith out of the ward. He was taken to Wenlock Hospital for treatment and later brought back to the prison.

Following the incident, prison superintendent Sharanabasappa conducted an inquiry and subsequently lodged a complaint at Barke police station. Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
