Brahmavar, Dec 17: Members of the Billava community, under the leadership of the Udupi District Billava Yuva Vedike, staged a protest in front of the Brahmavar police station on December 17, demanding the dismissal of police officers who allegedly assaulted Akshatha Poojary and registered a false FIR against her.

Thousands of protesters gathered in front of the police station and alleged that Akshatha Poojary was subjected to police excesses. They also accused the police of registering a false case against Akshatha and her mother, expressing strong resentment over the incident.

The protesters demanded that an FIR be immediately registered against the officers involved in the alleged assault, warning that they would not leave the spot if their demand was not met. They asserted that the agitation would continue until justice is delivered to Akshatha. The demonstrators further insisted that the officers responsible for the alleged assault be booked and dismissed from service.

Addressing the gathering, Udupi District Billava Yuva Vedike president Praveen Poojary said that an FIR should be registered based on the complaint lodged by Akshata Poojary. He alleged that the police had registered a false FIR accusing her of obstructing official duty. He further claimed that the police visiting her house at around 4 am was illegal. Hence, he demanded immediate dismissal of the officers who allegedly went to Akshata’s house and assaulted her.

The protest continued for some time with strong sloganeering, seeking justice and accountability from the police department.
