Mangaluru, Dec 18: A fresh clash broke out between two groups of inmates inside the Mangaluru district prison.

Prison superintendent Sharanabasappa, who conducted a surprise inspection was reportedly obstructed by undertrial prisoners.

Later during another surprise inspection, inmates were seen shaking the iron gates of two prison blocks, shouting loudly and attempting to break them, leading to chaos inside the jail.

When on-duty staff tried to send the inmates back to their respective blocks, the situation began to spiral out of control. Mangaluru city police, along with a special task force and local police officers, rushed to the prison and brought the situation under control.

After normalcy was restored, CCTV footage was examined. It was found that the disturbance involved inmates from ‘A’ block — Mohiuddin Farad, Sarfaraz, Mohammed Altaf, Imtiyaz, Abdul Naujid, Mohammed Sahil Akram and Mohammed Hanif — and from ‘B’ block — Latesh Jogi, Manjunath, Murugan, Sachin Talapady, Tushar Ameen, Shabarish, Gururaj and Sumanth. A case has been registered against them for obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties.

It may be recalled that a similar clash had occurred earlier between two groups of inmates. Prisoners belonging to the two communities were then housed in separate barracks, and some inmates were shifted to prisons in other districts.

Meanwhile, based on specific inputs about the presence of mobile phones inside the jail, a search was conducted in certain cells. During the inspection, four mobile phones were recovered from two cells. In this connection, a complaint has been registered at the Barke police station.
