Deep Brain Stimulation surgery marks breakthrough at Kasturba Hospital Manipal

Media Release

Udupi, Dec 18: For thousands living with movement disorders, simple activities like holding a cup of tea, buttoning a shirt, or simply walking becomes a daily struggle. Although medications can provide relief in the early stages, their effectiveness often fades with time. This is where Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), also called the pacemaker for the brain, steps in as a life-changing treatment option. This is especially true for treating specific neurological conditions, primarily movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, when their symptoms are no longer adequately controlled by medication, or the side effects of medication become intolerable.

DBS: A value-add for movement disorders

DBS is a surgical procedure where thin electrodes are implanted into specific areas of the brain responsible for controlling movement. These electrodes are connected to a small device placed under the skin near the collarbone, much like a heart pacemaker, and therefore, the system is also referred to as ‘the pacemaker for the brain’. When activated, this device delivers controlled electrical pulses that regulate abnormal brain signals, helping reduce symptoms like tremors, stiffness, and involuntary movements.

While DBS can’t cure Parkinson’s disease, it can be used as a highly effective management strategy to improve the quality of life for patients dealing with significant movement limitations. Patients who may also benefit include those who have had Parkinson’s disease for at least 5 years and continue to respond to medicines, but experience severe “OFF” periods.
DBS is also a proven therapy for CERTAIN Dystonias, epilepsy seizures and severe psychiatry conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) & severe depression cases.

Is DBS safe?

DBS is a safe and well-established procedure. As with any surgery, some risks like infection or bleeding may occur, but these are relatively rare. Side effects, if present, are usually temporary and manageable. After the procedure, many patients walk more smoothly, eat without assistance, or reduce their medication burden, all contributing to a more confident and active life.

In December 2022, Neurosciences departments of Kasturba Hospital Manipal, performed the first-ever DBS procedure in coastal Karnataka, marking a new chapter in advanced neurological care for the region. Since then, the hospital has carried out several such procedures with consistently successful outcomes. Today, patients in and around Udupi no longer need to travel to metropolitan cities for the procedure. The region is home to expert neurology and neurosurgery teams equipped with modern DBS technology, ensuring world-class care close to home.
