Bengaluru, Jan 9: City police have arrested a 19-year-old domestic help and her husband, both natives of Assam, in connection with the theft of valuables worth Rs 1.37 crore from a businessman’s residence while the family was away celebrating the New Year.

The arrested have been identified as Hajira Begum (19) and her husband Shabbir Hussain (23). Police said the entire stolen property — 787.66 grams of gold ornaments, 291.08 grams of silver items and seven expensive watches — has been recovered from the couple’s residence.

According to police, Hajira had been working at the businessman’s house on 8th ‘A’ Main Road for nearly three years, from 2022 to 2024, before taking a three-month break. Investigators said the couple allegedly used this period to plan the theft.

“She rejoined work just before the New Year. Being familiar with the house and its valuables, she allegedly planned the crime with her husband,” a senior police officer said.

The businessman and his family had left Bengaluru on December 30 to celebrate the New Year outside the state. When they returned the next day, they found gold ornaments, silver articles and seven costly watches missing from a cupboard. A complaint was immediately lodged at the Sadashivanagar police station.

During the investigation, police found that Hajira had informed her husband after the family left the house. Based on CCTV footage and technical surveillance, the police tracked down the accused and recovered the stolen valuables.

Both the accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway, police added.
