Goa to act against tourists harassing foreigners on beaches

Panaji, Mar 10: The Goa government has begun taking action against tourists found harassing foreign visitors for selfies and engaging in unruly behaviour on the state’s beaches, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte informed the legislative assembly on Tuesday.

Khaunte said that while Goa welcomes tourists from across India and abroad, irresponsible behaviour will not be tolerated as it harms the state’s reputation as a global tourism destination.

He noted that authorities have recently observed incidents where some young tourists approached foreign visitors on beaches seeking selfies and behaved in ways that disrupted the peaceful environment.

“I have discussed the matter with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, and steps are being taken to strengthen enforcement, including deploying additional police personnel on beaches through the Tourism Police Unit in coordination with local police stations. Arrests are being made wherever necessary,” the minister said.

Emphasising the need to maintain discipline, Khaunte said Goa’s hospitality should not be mistaken for leniency.

“Goa welcomes every visitor with warmth and hospitality, but this cannot be mistaken for a lack of discipline. Any behaviour that disrespects fellow tourists, inconveniences visitors or disrupts public order will invite strict action,” he said.

The minister also said the government has directed authorities to increase the presence of women constables in the Tourism Police Unit to further strengthen safety on beaches.

He urged visitors to enjoy the destination responsibly and respect local laws, culture and fellow travellers, adding that the government is committed to ensuring Goa’s beaches remain safe and respectful for everyone.
