Kolkata, Mar 19: With the announcement of Assembly election dates in West Bengal, political activity has intensified across the state. The situation has become particularly volatile in Minakhan, located in North 24 Parganas district, where protests erupted following the release of candidate lists by the Trinamool Congress.

Amid this heightened political climate, police on Thursday reported the recovery of a body believed to be that of a local Trinamool Congress worker. The discovery has further escalated tensions in the region.

The deceased, identified as 38-year-old Moshiur Kazi from Gangnia village under the Haroa Assembly constituency, was found in a severely mutilated condition. Residents alleged that he was an active party worker and suspect that he was murdered and his body dumped at the site.

The body was discovered early in the morning by locals in Jhujhurgacha village, which falls under the Sonapukur-Shankarpur Gram Panchayat in the Minakhan Assembly constituency. According to initial observations, the victim had multiple deep injuries caused by a sharp weapon.

Police from Haroa station arrived at the scene soon after receiving the alert and took custody of the body. The incident, occurring just ahead of the elections, has caused widespread concern and unrest in the area.

Speaking to reporters, the victim’s brother said the family was informed in the morning. “When I saw the body, I recognised my brother. He has been brutally killed. There has been longstanding political rivalry. We want justice,” he stated.

A senior officer from the Basirhat Police District revealed that the victim’s face was disfigured to such an extent that identification was initially difficult. Only after close examination was he recognised. Authorities confirmed that the body has been sent for post-mortem examination and a case has been registered.

Police are currently investigating all possible angles, including political rivalry and personal enmity. According to family members, Kazi had left home the previous night saying he was going out for work but never returned. His identity was confirmed after relatives arrived at the scene later in the day.
