LeT commander killed by kin in Pakistan; incident highlights internal strife

New Delhi, Mar 22: Bilal Arif Sarafi, a commander of the banned terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba, was allegedly stabbed and shot dead by his own family members after Eid prayers in Pakistan on Saturday, sources said.

The incident reportedly occurred near the group’s former headquarters in Muridke. While the exact motive behind the killing remains unclear, intelligence sources suspect a family dispute. Those allegedly involved in the murder have been taken into custody, sources added.

Unverified videos circulating on social media purportedly show the aftermath of the incident, with Sarafi lying motionless. However, the authenticity of these clips could not be independently confirmed.

According to reports, Sarafi played a key role in recruitment activities at the Muridke centre, identifying and indoctrinating youth into the organisation’s ranks through ideological training. He was not listed as a wanted individual in India.

The incident comes against the backdrop of rising terror-related challenges within Pakistan. The country ranked first in the Global Terrorism Index 2026, emerging as the most terror-affected nation in 2025, with over 1,100 deaths and more than 1,000 attacks recorded during the year.

Reports indicate that provinces such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan accounted for the majority of incidents, while the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan remained the most active outfit, responsible for a significant share of attacks and fatalities.

Observers note that the incident reflects the growing internal instability linked to militant networks, which have increasingly turned inward, exacerbating security concerns within the country.
