Kasargod, Apr 5: A surge in raw material prices over the past few months has forced beverage producers to hike prices of soft drinks and cold beverages, including soda. The decision was announced by the Kasargod District Committee of the Kerala Soda and Cold Beverage Manufacturersâ Association.
Officials explained that costs of gas, sugar, flavouring agents, bottles, and transportation have escalated sharply in recent weeks. Many small beverage units, still selling at old rates, have been operating at a loss.
âNearly 50% of small soda production units across the district have already suspended operations,â warned committee officials, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Struggling against big brands
Traditional soda producers are finding it increasingly difficult to compete with large branded beverages sold in plastic bottles, which dominate the market. Vendors selling soda in glass bottles report severe losses, unable to match the reach and marketing of bigger brands. âOpportunities in trade are dwindling,â industry sources lamented.
Revised price list
The association has announced a revised price list: a box of soda will now cost Rs 140 and a box of cold beverages Rs 220. Retail prices have been fixed at Rs 10 per soda bottle and Rs 10 per cold beverage. The new rates have come into effect from April 2, the committee confirmed.
Officials stressed that the price hike is essential to sustain production and ensure that small and medium-sized beverage units continue operations amidst rising costs, safeguarding livelihoods across the district.
