Udupi, Mar 13: Chandra Shetty, who had been absconding after killing his own 2-year-old son at Manjotti near Hiriadka here has now been arrested by the Hiriadka police at Vashi near Mumbai on Saturday March 11.

Shetty had married Asha three years ago who was born and brought up in Maharashtra. Chandra had met her for the first time in a dance club where he was working.  She was a bar dancer. After a courtship of a year, they married. The couple had a 2-year-old son Mithun.

Asha was pregnant for the second time. This time, Chandra told her that he is going to take her to his home in Udupi for the delivery.  Since she had never met his parents or family members she readily agreed.  The couple and their son Mithun came to Udupi by train and alighted at Indrali railway station.

He then took them to Hiriadka on an auto rickshaw.  As they reached Manjotti he asked the rickshaw driver to stop the rickshaw. He then led his wife and son through the woods.  When Asha asked him as to where he was heading them, he replied that his home was in the same vicinity. As they reached the middle of the woods, he tried to kill Asha.  At this point Mithun started crying. Fearing that his cry would alert the people in the vicinity, he stabbed his own son to death and fled the place thinking that Asha too had died as she had fallen unconscious.

It was only when a passerby noticed Asha and admitted her to the hospital that the entire episode came to light. Since Asha did not know Kannada, it was very difficult to get details from her initially. But somewhat Asha conveyed them the message that she had a son with her. When people went to the woods on the next day, they found Mithun's body in a blood pool.

However, Chandra had managed to escape by this time. The police had no clue about his whereabouts, since Asha too did not know her husband's past. The detail investigation then revealed that he was from North Karnataka but was working in Manjotti some years ago. This helped the police to obtain more facts about him which ultimately revealed that he had joined a hotel owned by a person from Brahmavar at Vashi. The police team led by inspector Raghav Padil went to Vashi and took Chandra to custody.
