Mangalore: Cattle trade turning into battle in district

Naveen Menezes
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (NM)

Mangalore, Apr 22: The killing of 24-year-old Kabeer, a cattle trader from Krishnapura, Suratkal, at Sringeri reportedly by the Anti Naxal Force (ANF) personnel shows how risky it is for cattle traders to venture into the business. The district has been a blind witness to a number of physical attacks on cattle traders, most attacks carried out by the ‘moral police’ even before the police reach the spot.

The increasing threat to life and assault has created a sense of panic among the cattle traders in the city.

File Photo

"We have to risk our lives for our livelihood," says 52-year-old Mohammed Haneef of Vamanjoor who is in the cattle trading business since the age of 24. "Previously, our vehicle transporting cattle was stopped allegedly by the right wing activists. We had to run for our lives or else we would have been beaten mercilessly. They don’t even want to know whether we have the purchase receipt of cows. For them, transporting cows is in itself a crime," he says.

This is the common fear among the cattle traders in the district. There are hundreds of cases registered in the police station of physical assault allegedly by right wing activists while carrying out cattle trade. A case of mercilessly thrashing five persons at Kudupu is a recent example.

The right wing activists claim that they try to stop cattle trafficking because the police do not take action swiftly. "Cattle belonging to poor farmers have been reported stolen in many places including Suratkal. Sometimes, the cattle are dumped mercilessly inside the transporting vehicle. These cruel means of cattle trading pains us," says Bajrang Dal leader Sharan Pumpwell.

Muneer Katipalla of DYFI feels that it is the police who should be taking action and no one else. "If illegal trading is reported, why can't they inform the police, and why do they assault?" he questions.

However, the unlawful methods have affected the legal cattle traders. Haneef says, "Cattle trading is the only business I have been doing for over 25 years. I have a son who earns less and I have a daughter who is of a marriageable age. My family keeps telling me not to venture into this business. I am perplexed."

The family has a strong reason to stop him from continuing this business. A number of assaults have sent families into a state of worry and fear, and more shocking is the truth that there is nothing concrete happening even after a police complaint is filed. That the business was highly risky was what even Kabeer's parents told him, and sadly for them, their worst nightmare came true when their son was shot dead by ANF personnel.

Earlier in a press meet, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had condemned the increasing number of cattle thefts in the region and demanded that cattle thieves be booked under Goonda Act. A sensible demand, one may say, but to kill a cattle trader on mere suspicion, irrespective of whether the cattle were being transported legally or not, can never be justified.

Skyrocketing meat prices

Due to the decrease in cattle trading, the price of beef has gone north. Says 62-year-old Pascal D’Souza, "A few years back, I remember buying one kilogram beef for Rs 50, however, today it is Rs 160. Earlier, we bought beef because it was cheap while chicken, pork and mutton were costlier. Today, all these have become costly."

TODAY THE PROBLEM INFRONT OF US IS HINDUS BELIEVE IT IS BEEF TRADERS WHO MAKE CATTLE THEFTS ON WHICH THE WHOLE FAMILY LIFE ESPECIALLY MAJORITIES WHO LOST THEIR LAND IN LAND REFORMS NOW DEPENDENS ON SOLE INCOME AND THAT TOO BEING NOT ALLOWED MEANS WHO WILL TOLERATE FOR SUCH ACTS ?
THE SOLUTION IS KABBER NEED NOT HAVE RUN AND COULD HAVE SHOWN DOCUMENTS AS PROOF AND TRADERS SHOULD BUY FROM RELIABLE SOURCE BUT NOT THIEVES FOR THEIR HIGHER MARGIN WHICH IS THE RESULT SOME ORGANISATIONS KEEP EYE ON THIEVES.
THE POLITICAL BIGWIGS SHOULD NOT INTERFERE IN SUCH MATTERS FOR THEIR GAINS THAT INCREASES DOUBTS IN THE MINDS OF PEOPLE & RESIST.

India is not Majorities nor minorities. It belongs to INDIANS. Stop spitting communal venom dude. This is what you want to teach your future generation. People with this kind of mentality are responsible for disrupting peace of our beloved country by spitting communal hatred among INDIAN brothers.

When a humans bash up or murder other human do you think you are pleasing god. Respect humans first.

I humbly urge whosoever is consuming beef enjoy it & request beef sellers not to entice or tempt non-beef eaters. Don't give them the taste of beef, Pork, chicken & sheep. Already prices were skyrocketed. Day-by-day meat eater’s population is increasing.
THEREFORE DON'T SELL OR COOK & GIVE TO NON-MEAT EATERS THE TASTE OF ANY KIND OF MEAT.
I also urge Hindus, if your sentiments are hurt don’t consume any kind of meat & fish refrain from it.

Interstate transportation of animals & birds should not have any hindrance or blockade on the state borderers.

If such law is in place should be abolished immediately so that all our brethren have their livelihood in plenty.

I kindly suggest, urge & humbly request all the recently sprouted Hindu organizations to help open more cattle slaughter houses in every Taluks.

Presently we have only 1 cow slaughter house in Mangalore for the whole of South Kanara District.
BELTHANGADY - NO CATTLE SLAUGHTER HOUSE.
SULLIA - NO CATTLE SLAUGHTER HOUSE.
BANTWAL - NO CATTLE SLAUGHTER HOUSE.
PUTTUR - NO CATTLE SLAUGHTER HOUSE.

I AM NOT SURE WHETHER THERE IS A CATTLE SLAUGHTER HOUSE IN UDUPI DIST.
    1) KARKALA – IF NO CATTLE SLAUGHTER HOUSE SHOULD BE OPEND IMMEDIATELY.
    2) KUNDAPUR - IF NO CATTLE SLAUGHTER HOUSE SHOULD BE OPEND IMMEDIATELY.

Due to only one Slaughter House in Mangalore heavy to heavy burden on 1 & transportation cost of cattle & meat to & fro to all these Taluks increases meat prices.

THEREFORE, ALL MEAT CONSUMERS SHOULD HAVE A MEET TO INCREASE MEAT IN THE MARKET THERE BY ALLOWING ONE EACH SLAUGHTER HOUSE IN EACH TALUK/SIX TALUKS.

THEN YOU WILL FIND MEAT PRICES FALL DOWN IMMEDIATELY / INSTANTLY.

I urge Chief Minister Siddharamiah & Health Minister U. T. Khadar to OPEN MORE & MORE SLAUGHTER HOUSES. REMOVE PERMITS TO SLAUGHTER HOUSES & ENCOURAGE ANIMAL HUSBANDRY SO THAT PLENTY OF LIVE CATTLE, PORK, CHICKEN & SHEEP AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET SO THAT THE PRICES MEAT IN THE MARKET COME DOWN DRASTICALLY

I agree with santoshprabhu. It's no where related to cow slaughter or any communcal issue. Media or public is misleading. it's just the suspecious behaviour of the person ended up ANF. It's always like that. you behave suspecious and you are fired. Why didn't they shoot the person who was also from same community ? he was behaving proper taking the documents to the checking spot. This guy behaved suspecious and ANF can not take any risk. It may end up a major attack on them. So, they will definitley take the action. So, let's not mix the issues.

People seem to be missing the van for the bus! Please address the larger issue of illegal cattle trading. Please check as to why unabated frisking & inhuman conditions exists for these poor animals? why is Mangalore dependednt on such sick & about to die cattle for meat? Can it not be imported from Australia or Dubai? There are larger questions & these need to be taken up by the State Govt on a war footing to address the beef requirement for Mangalore or DK & the subsequent supply mechanism. Else you will still find vague 'Kabeer's happening every now & then

@ Vinayak,People has been eating beef in this region since several hundreds, if not thousands of years.

Now the Sanghi thugs cannot come in and dictate what people can and cannot eat. India is not yet talibanised.

Trying to arm twist and bully the minorities in order to please a few upper castes is not going to happen. Perhaps you will have to learn to live with it.

The fact is that i have seen several castes among hindus and BC's who do eat beef/ Buffalo/ Ox . SO if you are denying or hiding facts will not change the truth.

How are beef eaters, even hurting your sentiments. They are not cooking beef in your house, neither they are entering your houses and eating beef there. How exactly are they hurting the sentiments of "majority".
There will be peace only if everyone understands their boundaries and does not try to cross it. You cannot have peace by depriving another their basic rights. Interfering in one's food habits is the worst that you can do.
If you think slaughtering cows is inhumane what about the goats, sheep, and chickens or fish?

Dear Vinayak Prabhu, with due respect to your sentiments I have mentioned a couple of incidents. Please go through them.
1)In late March 2014, an official car of Gujarat BJP was caught by Gujarat Police while it was being used to illegally transport cow meat. According to sources, certain leaders of Gujarat BJP have been indulging in an illegal business of cow meat, since the Gujarat Police is usually hesitant to check cars labelled with the Gujarat BJP symbol.
2)Just a few days after Modi’s Madhya Pradesh rally, Vipin Bilauha, former district convener of BJP’s cow cell in Madhya Pradesh was charged by Police under Sections 4, 6, and 9 of the MP Prohibition of Slaughter of Cow-progeny Act for transporting over 150 cows and calves for slaughter from Badagaon to Ganiyari when they were stopped about 35 km from Katni in Madhya Pradesh.

    It doesn't make any sense!

You have to accept people's way of life and food habits in a democratic nation. By saying that people who eat beef should stop because you dont eat is a joke!
