Narendra Modi as India's Prime Minister - A destiny

May 13: I am in a clear hurry to write this article as election results are fast approaching as much as BJP''s Narendra Modi, the man who many believe will be India''s next prime minister, is, clearly, also in a hurry. "Yes, there will be a tsunami, my friends, and it will be a Modi tsunami which will destroy the Congress port," "Do you want an MP or a PM? If you want an MP, vote for Congress, if you want a PM vote BJP. And if your son is sitting in Delhi, you don''t have to worry about anything," he had said recently.

From the crowd several thousand supporters cheered to their leader shouting at top of their voices "Yes, yes, we will send you to Delhi!"

At this juncture, assuming that Modi will make a triumphant march to Delhi soon, I do not intend to waste my time writing about Modi’s early life - wife or about the Gujrat communal riots of 2002. I think it is time for me now to discuss about how far and wide Modi would prevail as a successful PM.

Modi has often mocked the Congress government for not being able to control inflation and govern efficiently. He has promised more lucrative prices to farmers for their crops, better roads, and more irrigated farms if voted to power. Modi is an Iron Man like his mentor Saradar Vallabhbhai Patel. Past 12 years if critics are of the opinion that there was no real socio-economic development at the grassroot level in Gujarat, at the same time almost all critics do agree commonly that there was real development in the political area in Gujarat.

Gujarat is the only state in India where the BJP has been in power continuously since 1998 and won over half of the total seats in the last six elections. In 2012, the party registered its fifth consecutive win in the state polls - its third under Modi. He has been the chief minister of this western state for 12 years now.

No doubt, India will certainly have a new government in place after the results of the general elections are declared on May 16, and it is nearly certain that it will be a coalition government headed by Narendra Modi of the BJP. Many Indians desperately hope that Modi will be able to bring about an improvement in India’s economic fortunes. Expectations are high - but will he be able to deliver? The answer is a very ambiguous ''it depends''. That’s because the prime minister, as the head of the central government, has power to formulate and execute economic policies, but that power is severely limited in a COALITION government.

There is hope that as the prime minister, Modi will be able to meet at least part of the expectations of renewed growth. Certainly he will not be able to make any major structural changes in the short run. For that to happen, he needs greater political support in both houses of the parliament. But in the short run, even as the leader of a coalition government, there are low-hanging fruits which can be picked profitably:

• Although Modi will not be able to radically reduce the bureaucracy (which would have been simply wonderful for the economy) he will be able to make it more accountable and responsive to the needs of the people. With the reduction in red tape, industrial growth will improve, and consequently increase employment in the formal sector.

• He could reduce the number and rationalize the number of government departments (or “ministries”) so that the government intervention and micro-management of the economy is significantly reduced. This will make government leaner and lead to more efficient use of public funds.

• He could restructure the way public assistance is given to the poor. Currently it is a rat’s nest of complicated schemes of subsidies, all created for the ostensible purpose of helping the poor but most of the spending ends up being siphoned away. A direct cash transfer scheme to those below the poverty line will not only reach the target but also reduce the cost to the public. This will definitely have popular support although it will not be popular with those administering the current complex system.

A Pakistani industrialist is sanguine/confident that NarendraModi will infuse new life in Indo-Pak trade and the investment regime, and transform the present scenario of policy paralysis and the lack of optimism into more bang for the buck.

The various analysts and commentators on Pakistan’s electronic media and in their columns in the national newspapers generally opine that things would be rough for Pakistan once Modi settles into the driving seat at 7, Race Course Road in New Delhi. Usually, they give more importance to the rhetorical balderdash regurgitated by Amit Shah and his ilk, who maintain their aggressive posture at most of the campaign rallies. They also routinely refer to Modi’s anti-Pakistan and anti-China statements to prove their point.

Pakistan’s business community, most of whose leaders are gung-ho about liberalization of trade and investment with India, are, for the first time, discussing, watching, and trying to understand the dynamics of the Indian election process, and especially the ramifications of a Modi government. The buzz in the bazaars and in various trade organizations is that there would be a shift in the Pakistani-specific thinking from Chief Minister Modi to Prime Minister Modi.

India is a democracy, and its government is “of the people, by the people, for the people.” Its economic policies and the consequent poverty are also of the people, by the people, and for the people. But India needs economic freedom for its political freedom to be meaningful.

Modi alone cannot transform India; he does not have the power. No one person does; only Indians collectively more importantly should come from the adversaries within the party. It is an understatement to say that Modi has powerful political enemies, some within his own party. The primary reason for that is that he is an outsider: a self-made man who does not belong to the club of the elite that has been ruling India for 60-odd years. He does not have a stake in the perpetuation of the system that has kept India abjectly poor and mostly illiterate - one in which the government has near-absolute control of the economy. Those in government have the power to implement policies that are good for them, but are harmful to the people at large.

During the campaign, the indefatigable leader - his party reckons Modi will have travelled some 300,000 km (18,641 miles) across India and spoken at 437 public meetings by the time the elections end - has communicated to voters through tea-shop meetings using multiple video links and holograms. These allow him to "appear" at a number of rallies at the same time.

"People who have worked with his government say Modi prefers to depend on a team of handpicked bureaucrats rather than his ministers in getting work done. He brings in young professionals to work as interns in the government. He holds regular away-days with bureaucrats in resorts where, according to one participant, he "listens intently to deliberations, takes notes and never nods off to sleep".

Here I have to testify a video that I had seen recently by Dr B M Hegde aired by some political wings. He testifies, in the flight, in the business class, Modi was in the front row while Dr Hegde was at the rear end. After learning about Dr Hegde, Modi himself personally came to him to know about family programmes to be implemented in Gujarat and later they were implemented. I must admit here from Dr Hegde that Modi is a humble learner to the core for the welfare of his people. "He's very focused, works very hard and gives the impression of a man with a mission," says one bureaucrat, who is critical of his record in the riots.

In the end, no politician, in recent history, has divided India like Modi.

His supporters regard him as some sort of a messiah who can return India to high growth and a position of prestige and strength. His critics - and many of them include some of India''s most distinguished thinkers, writers and academics - believe he threatens the idea of a plural India.

"Whatever people might say," says BJP leader Arun Jaitley, "Modi has succeeded in communicating directly to the people."

How far Indians have responded will be known on 16th of May; a great wish of many, can be Modi's destiny.

Modi, if he becomes the PM will be a PM in a hurry to make changes in India. He will seek to industrialize India rapidly and effectvely, reduce redtape and make beauraucracy more responsive. Corporate interests who have backed him, will be happy as he will take care of their interests in a efficient and transparent manner. So he will be an effective PM on the economic front.

But on the social and cultural front it would be another story. He will look the other way as the sangh parivar and its sister groups will indulge in their communal agenda surreptitiously under the radar. Sangh Parivar will use his Premiership as a license to push their agenda to intimidate and subjugate minorites, at the level of street politics, while Modi takes the high road and talks the high talk of economic development. This is the Gujarath Model, efficient and effective economic development for those on the right side of the fence but with social and cultural regression of the minorities and weaker sections of society.

He has set up Gujarth state petroleum corporation (GSPC ) in andhra. Despite the UPA being in power he has done it in andhra. He has also set up GSPC in surat his state. He also has a petroleum minister in his gujarath cabinet of ministers. No other state maharasthra, kerala or even Karnataka has explored oil offshore. Only gujarath has done it that to in andhra. Now Amul has already planning to set up in Varnasi !!!

Mr.D'souza - you seem to be one among those who think miracles are possible.

Having known a persons past and his attitude towards his political enemies, I am for one will never think that the life of an ordinary Indian will ever improve from here. He was in power in Gujarat for 3 consecutive terms and see the life of the middle and lower class Gujarati's. go to the streets and villages of Gujarat and you will know their condition. if a person in 15 years could not improve their living condition, you expect that to come to all Indians? you are in a dream world.
I will tell you what he will do.
He will help the industrialist to grow further and perhaps that will create some jobs in the urban areas.
he may build some roads to connect big cities but as for the rural population, he will not do much.
God forbid if Hindutva goes into his head(with pressure from RSS and VHP) most of the minorities will suffer.
As for our relationship with Neighbours, it is simply not possible to improve with hardline policies and therefore there will be more attacks.
Nevertheless I wish you all fans of Modi and optimists who think the miracles on way, Good Luck to You.

Nobody simply hates Modi, but his authoritarian behaviour, out of way pampering few industrialists at the cost of the backward poor, his hatred for the Muslims & Christians as the RSS ideology, him running Gujarat like a self-styled dictator by suppressing those opposes him and attacking the leadership of the opposition and the neighboring country leaders with cheap and arrogant comments are appreciated either in India nor abroad.

His good quality like – his non-corrupt nature, dynamic leadership and keeping the bureaucrats remain always on their toes are appreciated and welcomed by all.
But if Modi divides the Indians in the name of religion then the extremist radicals of both Hindus and Muslims will divide this great nation into chaos and internal disturbance that is a lose-lose situation for the growth of India and the bright future of our GenNext.
    Jai Hind!

From vision to a great vision!

India's major problem or hurdle in the way of development is our out growing population. Where we were few years back and where are we now (comparing Chinas population. It is high time that we learn some lesson from China.

I remember Late Indira & Sanjay Gandhi played some role in bringing family control plan and that became a big political controversy. That is our political agenda.

Indians should work united with one goal and aspiration above political game or conspiracy.

That is what we expect from him. Hope Modi will treat all individuals, all religions equally, similar to Atalji's 'rajdharma' policy.Let his so called 'Gujarat' vision' enlighten the whole country. Let him bring confidence in minorities, who are simply scared and omitting venom against him. Let him work hard to develop infrastructure and reduce corruption.Let him not waste time in taking revenge against scams/corruption of previous government or communal violence. However take strict action against enemy countries and terrorism.Let him respect Indian verdict and take each and every Indian citizen into confidence in building 'strong India'!!

Is India ready for Modi? Its a question to debate. Some want Modi, others like Modi. Some hate Modi. These are the two diverse and divided factions. Congress lovers and many of Christians and Muslims join in hating Modi because of past actions of BJP and inactions at Modi at helm in Gujarath.
I want to walk the middle line. Modi has infused a lot of interest in me. India appeared to be dead under Man Mohan Singh. Modi has resurrected India from the day BJP has named Modi as a prime Ministerial candidate. Whether he will succeed to be as a PM to be seen in a couple of days. My sure guess is -Yes he will unless something drastically goes wrong.

What he will do if he becomes PM, I am confident he will rejuvenate India, perhaps for the better, otherwise Modi era will be dead.
He will look at each and aspect of India from toilets to boardrooms and farms and villages and overseas Indians.

India needs a leader in this century to take India as a power nation. Today India has been praised abroad for its growth but within India masses suffer due to political anarchy and corruption chaos. Politicians are not politicians, they have become thieves . Poor suffers while politicians thrive because they are thieves.
Modi must tackle the government, its chronic bureaucracy and red tape on each and every service from issuing passports to voter cards.

Indians must respect Indians. Service must be given and received. Patriotism must be injected in Indians. And above all India must stand as a nation equal to other nations. When we allow foreigners to India on open visas or visa free there is a need for Indians to be allowed to foreign countries on open visas or visa free.
Our education need to be respected across the world.

I am hopeful Modi will do what the BJPs action plan has put out. Its a wind- ended political manifesto. It needs to be delivered by Modi. I am sure he will. Any thing short, will be Modi's destiny written in Indian history books.

Even Government and Political parties also not concerned much.
Our future and destiny are not completely in our control so is of the Govt as well!
We should do our duty and constantly learn to adjust with times and situations and shouldn't be very rigid.

UPA-1 was success because of communist kept congress under control, because of UPA-1 success congress hatched to wipe out communist.
UPA-2 was not success because of corruption, corruption because there was no one to control congress.
Indians will have a lot of hope on NAMO, but Namo need to control AMIT, otherwise Same story of Atalj's success over-shadowed by Mahajan's too much shining.

Change is always possible. Bad is not always bad. Bad can become stepping stone towards good. Humans are not stagnant water which rotates, but flowing water which purifies and strengthens. We humans take birth without knowing anything but learn continuously from our conception and become good, better and best. Humans are not destined to roat by doing the bad and worst things only. Even animals don't do that mistake.

Recently Rajapakshe was helped to massacre 100,000 innocent tamils during the venture of Prabhakaran's elimination. Which government helped him? At the outset, to those BJP supporters who think Congis are hiding in fear and keeping quiet, Let me say, I am also a Congress supporter, simply because of their Secular mindset. Being out of India, I could not vote, but asked the family members to vote for AAP, even while knowing AAP has no chance. This is because we need a secular, corruption free governance and not Congress or BJP or AAP or any other. Whoever wins, its the victory of our democracy, victory of the people and not any person or party.

Modi being the forerunner in this election, and all indications are that he will be the PM, I wish him well, wish BJP well but foremost wish India well.
I hope and pray, that Modi will become the catalyst that brings about change in the mindset of our politicians and people. And that he works towards a culture of Unity in diversity and not on communal lines. We do not want to see Gujarat, UP type riots, don't want to see the massacre of Kandamal, dont want to see Church attacks or pub attacks. Towards this goal its not just Modi or BJP has the responsibility but every citizen. Pope Francis today itself posed the question to all people, that every person should answer himself that whether self actions and choices lead towards peace and prosperity or towards conflict.

There is a Hindu story of Samudra Manthana in which heavenly treasures are brought out of the depth of Ocean including Amrith, but first to emerge out of the ocean was deadly poison which, Lord Shiva drank and held it in his neck, thereby acquiring the name Neelakanta.

I hope and pray poison is taken away from Peoples mindset and continue the Samudra Manthan until we have the Amrith of peace and prosperity for all

However dividing personality Modi may be, he appears to be equipped to run the government effective manner.

The question is how Mr. Modi will deliver what he has promised.

    Dear Editor,
    Well timed article !!
For all citizens the truth here is, have we elected the right government ?
If Yes, We expect a PM candidate who is a leader & who can deliver. He should have the capacity to decide/deliver during crucial times.
Modi of course has the best of abilities ...But not his party men.

NDA tHEN HAS TO GARNER THE RIGHT ALLIES WHICH WILL NOT BE A PROBLEM IS NDA AS THE CURRENT SATE CROSSES 200 MARK. bihar/up are too close a call and opinion polls are predicting 80 plus seats with just 26% vote share for BJP ..its a very close call and never in the history has this happened with such a vote percentage ..

P M Manmohan Singh has lots of positive points in comparison with BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Modi.
Readers may please sight few points:
    1. PM is well educated and qualified person whereas Modi is under qualified
    2. PM has rich experience in Financial situation of the country and a economist but Modis knowledge on finance very low
    3. PM is secular as required as per Constitution of India where Modi standby one religion
    4. PM made economic revolution in the country being finance minister and so that our country not faced problem with economic imbalance others like USA etc
    5. PM introduced RTI to bring transparence but Modi not appointed Lokayukta for last 10 years in Gujarat
    6. No allegation of riots/communalism against PM but Modi facing charges in Court
    7. To empower women, Singh Govt. Supported educations to women & introduced women banks and to introduced new law against rapists for high punishment but whereas Modi snooped a Bangalore based women
    8. PM not protecting the corrupt person in his alliance but Modi gave free land nominal value of Rs.1 per square feet to Adani group
PM Manmohan Singh is a strongest person by having good patience, simplicity, truthfulness, fairness and able to control anger but Modi can never be compared these qualities with Great PM Manmohan Singh.
Facts & figures bitter to those who like hypes and dramas

Dear Rajesh Shetty, being a congressman i am always opposing Modi & BJP. It is proved from the history, no one can give the stable govt at the central except Congress and Gandhi family. Whatever Modi can say, but he also cannot give good governance. But i am social worker, so i hate communal hatreds but i support development of the country.
