Kundapur: Impact - Tree felling operation stayed; Animal Care Trust rescues birds

Kundapur, Sep 12: A day after daijiworld published its report on the mass death of young birds due to unscientific felling of trees for the widening of the national highway, the forest department woke up and promptly responded to the issue by visiting the affected areas on Thursday September 11.

From Shastri circle here to Sangam, trees that were centuries old were indiscriminately chopped in order to widen the highway. This resulted in the death of a large number of sea crows and cranes that had come to nest for the breeding season. Daijiworld had brought to light the issue with report and pictures, which caught the attention of animal lovers and the forest department.

Kundapur zone conservation officer and his team visited the spot and conducted inspection, and ordered a temporary stay on the tree felling operation.

Moreover, Mangalore Animal Care Trust chairperson Suma Nayak who read the report on daijiworld contacted this correspondent, who covered the story, and sought information on the issue. On Thursday, she led a team comprising Shwetha Mendon, Tausif Ahmed, Clanute, Krishnaprasad and Aditya to the spot and shifted the orphaned birds to cages brought by the team, and took them away to Mangalore.

Thus, Animal Care Trust not only rescued the orphaned birds from further danger, but also gave a new lease of life to birds that were struggling between life and death by providing them a shelter where they would be looked after. The Trust also brought a relief to the locals who were pained by the sight of dying birds.

"Normally, the sea crows and cranes fly away from these trees at the end of September, when the wings of the young ones are strengthened sufficiently. If the tree felling operation had been postponed by another 15 days, lots of young birds would have survived. We were shocked when we read the report on daijiworld. That is why we arrived here with our team. The young birds we rescued today will be nurtured till they are ready to fly and then set free," said Suma Nayak.

Town council member Sridhar Sherigar, environmentalist and garage owner Vittal Kanchan and others were present.

So happy to see that at least some of the little birdies were saved thanks to the efforts of ACT and the locals. But still feel sorry for those whose lives were snuffed out by uncaring authorities. Our useless elected representatives, ministers and MLAs are nowhere to be heard or seen. In spite of having the power to intervene, they just don't do anything. It took a conservation officer to put a temporary halt to this senseless destruction. In any other western country, for anyone with a heart, the priority would have been save the wildlife first and then all else comes. But, I guess this is what we can expect in India, mindless destruction in the name of development and the after-effects are there and will be there for all to see and endure. Its only because of the tireless and thankless efforts of these few much maligned nature lovers and activists that we can hope for something in nature to survive. Otherwise, left to our politicos, we would only be looking at pictures or hearing stories of what was and what is now.

Kudos to the local populace and ACT thanks to Daijiworld for keeping the readers informed of the antics taking place in the name of development. Please the readers on Daijiworld as to how the little birdies are progressing with pictures so as to melt the hearts of those made with stone. Hope that some sleepy souls wake up from their slumber!

    Mr. Lenston,
We have destroyed the habitat of the poor birds, we don't have any right to do that, soon a day will come when only humans, humans and humans will be left behind then the real trouble will start.

LIFE IN ANY FORM IS PRECIOUS. Thanks to Daijiworld for the initiative they taken to conserve lives in any form. They have not only saved the lives of birds and made an attempt to rescue them but importantly they have preserved the lives of the trees too.

Recently they had tried and succeeded in saving the lives and future of poor young women fro flesh trade. Due to their intervention the police sprung in action and the menace seems to have been eradicated from Pandeshwar area.

I join several others in saying kudos to the Chief editor Walter of this media.

This means, the forest department, especially the forest minister and ecology ministers are no more. We will make sure you will never be elected in the next elections, WHATSOEVER.

Well done my dear ACT guys!!

Well done guys, I'm really moved by your kind act, sometimes I feel let's transport all our wildlife to countries where they will be loved and cared for, rather than suffer in the midst of ruthless lot.

Thank you daiji for your great efforts. Animal Care Trust has saved several lives. Negligence of NH authorities is cruelty to animals. Recently, I have seen a video, wherein Police Officer at USA, blocked entire vehicle fleet in the area, to save precious lives of few Ducklings which are crossing busy road. See the difference in value of life between two countries.
