Koreas exchange fire near border

Seoul, Oct 19 (IANS): Militaries of South Korea and North Korea (DPRK) exchanged fire Sunday across their border near Paju city in Gyeonggi Province, media reported.

South Korea's joint chief of staff said South Korea fired warning shots at the North Korean border post at around 5.40 p.m. when North Korean soldiers were approaching the military demarcation line in Paju, Xinhua reported citing Yonhap news agency. The South Korean side broadcast warning messages before the firing.

The North Korean military fired back and the exchange of gunfire lasted for around 10 minutes. No casualties among South Korean soldiers have been reported so far, Yonhap quoted the joint chief of staff as saying.

It added that South Korea has withdrawn tourists and farmers from near its fortified border with North Korea.
