For Rohtak girls, harassment, stalking is everyday ordeal

By Jaideep Sarin
Rohtak (Haryana), Dec 3 (IANS): Two braveheart sisters who took on their tormentors in a moving bus as they were being molested and assaulted made it to national, and even international, headlines from Haryana's Rohtak town. But in the same place, there were two other teenaged girls who, unable to bear their harassment, ended their lives just over three months back.

Both incidents and some more actually expose the rampant stalking, harassment and societal admonishment that girls from Haryana face from the largely patriarchal society.

Teenagers Nikita and Madhu, both of who were bright students and had dreams to go to the US, ended their lives August this year after consuming poison-laced juice.

In their separate suicide notes, running into six and four pages, the girls clearly mentioned about the shame and harassment they faced by constant stalking by men and boys when they went for their coaching classes. They even named their tormentors along with details of vehicle numbers.

The deaths of these girls neither shook the national media nor the system and the administration to the larger problem of uncurbed harassment and stalking.

But the reaction from the two college-going sisters, Aarti and Pooja, to three youth who harassed, molested and assaulted them last Friday in a moving Haryana Roadways bus while other passengers and the bus staff remained mute spectators has shaken a lot of people.

The video of the two sisters bravely taking on the youth and attacking them with a belt, hands and legs as they were themselves being assaulted, went viral after a fellow woman passenger shot it for them.

"It was not a one off incident. We face eve-teasing, stalking and harassment from boys and men everyday - from the bus stop to the bus and at other places," Aarti told IANS in the midst of several interviews that both sisters have been giving to TV channels and media organizations since Sunday.

"Like earlier, even on the day of this incident, people inside the bus, instead of helping us, told us to calm down and ignore the lewd gestures and comments. One of them said that these boys are like this only and we should not react. He said that if we react, the boys will rape us, throw acid or beat us up. Despite all this, we said that enough was enough," Pooja said.

"We have always taught our daughters to stand up to any wrong-doing against them. I am proud for what they have done," said their father Rajesh Kumar.

Rohtak district police chief Shashank Anand said that the case of all three accused, who are in judicial remand, would be referred to a fast-track court for early decision.

These are not just two incidents from Rohtak, the home town of former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

In May 2012, motorcycle-borne youths threw acid on a junior national volleyball player, Ritu Saini, 17, in Rohtak. The victim, a class 11 student, suffered burn injuries on her face, arms and chest.

In June 2011, two bikers threw acid on three girl students, when they were on their way to homes after their tuition classes.

"While girls face harassment and stalking from young men and boys, many of them try to ignore and suffer and don't complain to police," Seema Dahiya, another college student, told IANS.

Media cannot refute what is been published before , even if its a fake case. The ground reality in haryana and local news papers ( DAINIK BHASKAR ) clearly support those three innocent boys . The tide started to change , when one of passengers ( an aged woman by name nirmala ) gave written details about what realy happened inside the bus. Though police denied to register the FIR against girls , villagers started to protest and requested to release the boys within 24 hours.

Since then , crazy feminist media stopped to telecast the above episode and went to strange silence. The two girls forced a ' aged woman ' to vacant the seat and forced her to stand. These boys supported that woman , this resulted in a brawl , it became tense. Girls in a rage , vowed to teach a lesson , assaulted them and made a footage and published it. Strangely these girls have lots of such footages where innocents have been assaulted.

I have been criticised by certain intellectuals for being sarcastic about the incident before. @ sudhakar , kallianpur . R fernandes . R bhandarkar , and a ' feminist' jurry . Now all trauma boys faced was deserved ?! , or can they get their Jobs back !? , or these girls be arrested !?. is a big question !.

    roshan,

what you said is right.if laws are made favourable to one party without prima facie evidence
and right to arrest is given without a impartial investigation of both parties then
opposite parties will take advantage of the law and use this as a weapon to
    fulfill thier personal grudges.

lots of false dowry cases being filed these days is one glaring example.
even supreme court has recently expressed shock over rising
    false cases of dowry harassment.

    laws should be gender neutral.

In today's newspapers it has been reported that every thing was stage managed by these two girls and their videographer. Actually the girls themselves started quarreling with the boy for the Seat in the bus, and without provocation they started beating the boy and hence the onlookers did not interfere and as pre-planned they were carrying the belt.
This is confirmed by a lady passenger who was travelling in the same bus. The girls later twisted the incident as sexual harassment. This proves how the Law is being misused by some women.

    Mr. Kunte,

They were not carrying the belt but pulled from the men, beat them with it and surrendered it to the police. Police called the boys' parents who identified the belt as theirs and took it with them. This is was told by the girls to the media on the day of incident !

The public did not give them any support because the people there knew that the girls had asked a co-passenger lady to record them beating the boys. Who has the craze of getting themselves recording beating others if they were deliberately beating someone ?

    Sunil,
It looks like the girls need to be killed or kill themselves for the public to notice the torment they went thru. Then again,
-If they fight for their right and live to tell about it, there are hundreds negative questions and discussions to brand them as extremists
-If they kill themselves like Nikita and Madhu, it would go easy on the men who tormented them. Even after naming the men who harassed them, what legal action was taken? In death, the girls became just an added number to the long list of the innocent girls who lost their lives in desperation for lack of support from all areas of our system.
You are not making any point, but being a lawyer, jury and judge, all rolled in one, coming up with the verdict that the girls who fight back are wrong and the men who openly go about their business of harassing should be given the benefit of doubt so that they can victimize others.

Aarti and Pooja, by their bravery, have put back in limelight, the violent nature of the harassment towards women.

para ts of a article of todays cnn ibn:

    quote:
The two sisters are facing the criticism after another video surfaced showing them thrashing an alleged
eve-teaser in a park in the city.
The girls had earlier been lauded for
the bravery with which they fought with the three alleged molesters in a moving bus

The fathers of the men who appear in the bus video have said their children have done nothing wrong
and that the two sisters have a reputation of being violent.

"My child is innocent. I request the government that there should be proper inquiry into this and
then a decision should be made," father of one of the boys said.

Father of another alleged molester in the case claims that there are many such cases of these two girls.
"People of their own village tell how they once beat up the Headmaster of the village school. Nobody is
    happy with them," he said.

    Sunil,

Whats your claim ? They shouldn't have beaten up the molester in the park ? Shouldn't they have fought with the Head Master who may have tried to abuse them ? Have you any idea how many girls silently suffer molestation in schools and stop studying further out of fear ?

Should they have succumbed like many more girls/women succumbed to molesters ? Eh ????

Its true that due to patriarchal mentality, in certain states in India women are pushed to the interiors of the house. women are forced to wear a Ghoongat reaching upto their neck barely enabling them to see the path while they walk. They are made to relieve / answer the nature's call in the open from where stalking men abduct and rape them. Upon returning same women are killed for disgracing the family honour.

Female child is less preferred, terminated in fetal stage (upon getting to know the gender) and succeeded to see the light of the day, raised as a burden.

Same society is buying brides from other poorer areas, keeps them a wife shared between all males of the family and when she will be old or sick, she is kicked out. There are several women from Dharwad/Gulbarga who returned to their father's house upon being thrown out in similar way.

I commend the courage taken up by the Rohtak girls and all accolades to their parents who taught them to stand up against abuse. I salute them for supporting the girls in their ordeal that went viral throughout the media than reprimanding them in the name of family honour. Nevertheless, I fear safety these very girls against whom, in all possibility, the community of the accused will revenge.

India needs more parents and daughters like them.

latest reports is that the tussle between boys and these two girls were over the seat in bus and false case of molesting has been reported against these boys.in one kannada newspaper it was reported that one women who was travelling in the bus said that quarell was for seats.

even in times of india, it was reported that the incident might
be quarell for seats.villagers have demanded that it was for quarrel for seats and boys should be released within 24 hours.

these days true case as well as false case are also being registered.

some true cases are registered and other cases out of personal grudge.

law should be such that only guilty should be punished and not innocents.

let the police conduct an impartial investigation and take the account of story from both sides and if any party found guilty let the law take its course.

    Sunil,

Soon after the incident the girls spoke to media reporters wherein they said that the (two) boys were harassing them while they waited for the bus in the Buss Stand and upon boarding the bus and occupying the seats they told them 'tum Kudi ho, seet khali kero' meaning men should the first seated and then women. When they replied firmly refusing to vacate the seats, the boys scribbled their mobile number on pieces of paper and threw at them asking them to call them back. They called the third boy who joined them at the next stop after which the harassment increased and the girls put their mobile on video record mode and gave to the woman seated behind them to record while they involved in manhandling with the thugs.

I watched the reporting on TV. If anybody else watched some other version, please come up and put it here.

There were also report that two of the boys had applied for Army posting and passed first round tests but he Army refused to entertain their application on knowing their involvement in such a shameful episode.

Now tell me, is Army too involved ?

    lydia,

my point is that we should not judge anyone just by hearing one party's version.

how can any boys that too molest a girl in a crowded place like in a bus with people around?

and the boys are not road romeos.
they are from reputed families and have cleared Indian army entrance test and were on the verge of joining Indian army.

my point is that who ever done crime should get punishment.but media and one party cant who is guilty.for that police and judiciary is there.

let the police investigate and let the truth come out.if the boys are guilty let them be punished by courts.no one is objecting.but what we are objecting is media trial without hearing the version of other party in the incident.

fair justice is what is essential in a functioning democracy.

Well.. Well.. who stopped the boys family from giving rectified (fair in their perspective) interview to the media ? Why did they not counter refusal for the Army entry ?

If what the girls said is all lies, they should have put their version forward ! Do they have any ????

If the boys are from respected background, the girls are not illiterate ! They are college students, studying MCA !
