Udupi, Jan 2: The gas-filled bullet of a tanker came off while being in motion near the KG Road cross on NH 17 at Uppoor near here on early Monday morning. Another tanker with a load of bitumen, losing control a short distance, hit it resulting in severe injuries to the driver of the latter tanker.

While the gas-laden tanker was on its way from MRPL, Mangalore to Belgaum, the bitumen-laden tanker was also arriving from Mangalore. 

The mishap resulted in the blockage of the national highway for about five hours. Fire-tenders from MRPL, Mangalore rushed to the spot to prevent gas leakage and any resultant disaster. The process of transferring of gas to other tankers went on till evening.

Traffic was blocked for 5 hours from 3-00 am. Vehicles from Kundapur to Udupi took a detour via Brahmavar, Petri and Hebri and those arriving from Udupi hit the Ambagilu, Manipal, Perdur and Brahmavar route.
