Mangalore, Mar 2: The issue of the recent death of a girl of Kudmul Ranga Rao hostel due to malaria grabbed all the attention at the zilla panchayat meeting held here on Thursday March 1.
A chaos followed regarding the compensation to be given to the parents of the deceased girl. While K Sunder Gowda suggested Rs 10 lac, ZP CEO A M Kunjappa refused saying the amount was not available in the chief minister’s relief fund.
Sucharitha Shetty had a solution which received acceptance and backing from all members. He suggested that the members pay their honorarium of one month towards the compensation amount. They also urged the authorities to present the case before the government to seek higher amount as compensation.
The recent issue of the attempted suicides of two girls of the same hostel was also discussed at the meeting for which Kunjappa answered that the warden in question had been suspended and a department enquiry had been ordered in to the issue.
The members also discussed the pressing problem of vacant posts in many of the government hostels. Kunjappa assured the members that the government has been notified in this regard.
