Kundapur, Jul 1: The poor inhabitants of small islets, knowns as 'kudrus' in local parlance, located along the Kundapur river, are going through an ordeal of confinement due to torrential rains brought by strong winds during the monsoon. This time around, the people suffer the more on account of stormy winds than flash floods.
History has been repeated in the promises made, but seldom fulfilled. The district administration had again failed in their legitimate task, which should have been executed on a war footing. A permanent solution to the people’s hardships, especially during the rainy season, has been elusive since Independence.
The embankments on the rivulets have neither been built nor the protection of crops ensured, the sole cause being the bureaucratic lethargy of the local administration. The fate of the ailing children, senior citizens and that of pregnant women is at stake.
In the absence of reliable mode of transport and communication for the past several decades the living conditions, especially during the monsoon at various isles, Kannada Kudru,Uppina Kudru, Batte Kudru, Hari Kudru, Kamathara Kudru, Toplu, Padukone and Badakere are beyond description.
