Beltangady, Nov 2: Activists of Tulunadu Okkuta were detained by the local police when they were preparing to hoist the separate Tulu State Flag here on Sunday November 1 near Ambedkar Bhavan here. The incident occurred on Sunday November 1.

It is said that Tulunadu Okkuta president Shailesh R J along with activists were making arrangements to hoist separate Tulu State Flag in protest against Yettinahole project, and also in support of demand to include Tulu language in the eigth schedule of the constitution and demanding separate statehood for Tulunadu, claiming that the the people of the region were facing gross injustice. The police arrested them.

Several activists were present on this occasion.

Tulu flag was also hoisted at Pulithadi, Uppinangady at around 9 am on Sunday. Uppinangady police sub-inspector, Timmappa Naik and staff arrived on the spot and asked the concerned to bring down the flag that they said, was hoisted without obtaining prior permission.

Activists including those who were opposed to Yettinahole project argued that they have freedom of expression under the constitution and that they had done nothing illegal. Puttur assistant superintendent of polie, P B Rishvanth, rushed to the spot as the activists remained adamant not to lower the flag. He warned of action against those who hoisted the flag without obtaining prior permission. As the activists remained firm, he asked Uppinangady gram panchayat development officer, Abdul Asaf, to bring the flag down. The gram panchayat administration then arranged to lower the flag in the midst of protest by activists.

Convener of Anti Netravati River Diversion Committee, Dr Niranjan Rai and other leaders were present.

What is wrong in hoisting Tulunad Flag? Here in the United States, we hoist Indian Flag for our community events along with USA Flag.

Police should study the Indian Constitution, especially the Freedom of Expression clause.

I just don't understand why we need permission from others to hoist anything...?

    Reasons for Tulunad separate state:
1)As per the constitution a group of people speaking a language and having separate culture are entitled to have separate state. It is our right to have Tulu Nadu as our culture and language are different from Kannadigas.2) Tulu and Tulu Nadu culture will vanish if we do not have a seperate state. Tulu nadu has become kannada maya in the last 65 years. Tulu people do not speak in Tulu language for official functions. Tulu has taken a back seat in recognition. Kannada has been imposed ( in schools ) on Tulu Nadu people. Tulu has not been allowed for the children to learn
    3) Although Tulunadu brings in 2nd highest income to Karnataka state hardly any of it spent on Tulu Nadu
    4) There are hardly any job opportunities in Tulu Nadu and hence people migrate to other places, there is more violance in Tulu Nadu and tulu Nadu people do not have their own identity.5) We people from Tulu nadu do not have a seperate identiy of our own. kannada cannot be our identity and kannada is not our language6) If kannadigas argue that seperate statehood for tulu nadu is unacceptable, they only have to go back to their history ask themselves why they seperated from tamil Nadu.7) Kodugu, Mangalore, Udupi, kasaragodu,Uttar kannada, Sakaleshpur should be added together to form Tulu Nadu
8)Tulu should be made official language with encouragement for konkani, koorgi and byari bashe
9)People should study in tulu & English and only our regional languages such as Sanskrit, koorgi, konkani and byari bashe languages and reject Kannada as it is not our language10)Tulu news paper should be published instead of kannada news papers11)All the people should be made aware of the need of a seperate state as it is our constitutional right and Identity 12) All those who think that a seperate state is not needed unfortunately are not aware of few important factors and are not proud of our languages and culture13) having a seperate state is not against anybody as we

My support for Tulunad state always there. I don't understand one thing here ..is the 2 colord so called Kannada flag has any value in our constitution ....If not then how this can be hoisted and why not Tulunad flag. This Tulunad flag has enough proofs of its existantance in earlier days in our tuulunad as compared to the so called kannada flag. Also we cant waste our twin district so high generated revenue for entire karnataka. Jai Tulunad!

I love Tulu but I love Kannada which I studied in schools. Kannada is the oldest living language and I am proud to be a Kannadiga. Guys, separation is not a solution. We intellectual people of the coastal region were deprived of all govt facilities and were ruled by others. Now Let's be united and be the leaders to rule Karnataka. Don't ask for a portion of Karnataka. Think Big!!! If we go to Bangalore they make fun of our Kannada dialect but actually we speak the exact text book Kannada. Lot of Tulu movies now a days, Directors..please think of Kannada movies also....we are sick of the present sandalwood shows...(there are some good actors, directors in sandalwood) If Kodialbail and Kapikad can come together for this cause, it will be gold. Mangalore is the only city in Karnataka to have air port and sea port. Moreover, Mangalore is chosen for smart city project so why separation now? Lets lead the rest. Our elected representative irrespective of the parties, please help us in this.

Why not? Tulu is an ancient and sweet language. Tuluvas are very cultured people. Irrespective of mother-tongue or religious affiliation, people of coastal region of Karnataka, especially from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kasaragod, Chikkamagalur and other parts of the State must join hands. There is also need to protect Netravathi, which is the lifeline of Dakshina Kannada.
