Mangalore, Sep 27: The inauguration of a Parkinson’s free medical check-up and treatment camp was held by the Mallikatta Research Centre in association with the Rotaract Club, here on Wednesday September 26.
After inaugurating the function, Dr Supriya Hegde, psychiatrist and assistant professor, KMC, speaking on the topic of Parkinson’s disease informed that it is a progressive disorder which may affect in a mild form or it can lead to severe disability.
Futher according to her, Parkinson’s is a neurological disorder characterized primarily by tremor, muscle rigidity and akinesia. It is a controllable disease but cannot be completely cured, Dr Supriya declared.
Also on the occasion Dr Shankar, Medical director and eminent neurologist, Malikatta Neuro Centre, informed the gathering that the disease was more evident during the middle or later part of a person’s life due to degenerative changes in the chemical substances in a part of the brain. He even explained about the main causes, features, symptoms and remedial measures for dealing with this disorder. He too stated that its intensity could be controlled by timely treatment.
Moreover he informed that a free medical camp was being organized in order to create awareness and educate patients on the latest developments and research done on it in the medical sphere.
Another speaker Shreejith a psychotherapist spoke on the various exercise a patient can do to control the disease through audio-visual representation.
