Mysuru, May 19: Out of people from Kootegowdanahundi village of Chamarajanagara taluk who fell ill after consuming contaminated water who had been admitted to hospital here, two died on Wednesday May 18.

The deceased have been identified as Kencha Shetty (60) and Chikkathayamma (45). They were among a group of people who had fallen sick after consuming dirty rain water mixed with mud and other pollutants, supplied through a rusted pipe.

As the villagers continued to consume this water, over 30 persons from the villages had suffered from vomiting and dysentery after which they were admitted into the district hospital between May 7 and 15. Out of them, five were shifted to Mysuru after their conditions deteriorated.

District health and family welfare officer, Dr Pandu Vijayan, visited the village and arranged for opening of a temporary hospital there. Tests conducted on water from the village confirmed the presence of bacteria. Villagers have been demanding payment of compensation by the government. Dr Pandu Vijayan confirmed the presence of bacteria in the water samples drawn from the village and said that the villagers are being educated about hygiene and healthy habits.
