Mangaluru, Jul 12: The Dakshina Kannada district administration in collaboration with the district health and family welfare department and national service scheme, Mangalore University observed world population day at Town Hall on Monday July 11.

Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp.

After the inauguration, A B Ibrahim said, "Population issues vary from nation to nation. In western countries there is decrease in population whereas in India it is on the increase. Even though there is a huge population in our country there is labour problem."

Compared to the growth of population in the nation our district is seeing an increase in population which is two to three times more than other districts. There is need to create awareness among the general public. This is a serious issue and so we need to think about steps to control the population."

Dr Vishweshwar Bhat, health officer of Kalladka primary health care centre said, "The population in our country is increasing drastically compared to other nations in the world. The government has introduced various schemes like anna bhagya, ksheera bhagya for the betterment of the people but what are we doing for the government is what needs to be thought. Why can we not have a planned and well thought of family?"

"We see that people in Britain are suffering from obesity but in Somalia the people are suffering from starvation. This should not happen. Out of the total world population about 16 percent is in India. Population in western countries like Australia, Canada, America and others are in need of population, but in our country it needs to be controlled. If it is not controlled the progress of the nation will be affected."
