Bengaluru, Aug 20: The State Government has decided to file a special leave petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court challenging the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal’s order rejecting Karnataka’s application seeking 7 tmcft of water for the Kalasa-Banduri Nala drinking water project.

Karnataka’s water resources minister M B Patil met state’s counsel Fali Nariman in New Delhi on Friday and informed him to file the SLP before the Apex Court set right injustice meted out to the state by the tribunal, according to official sources in the state secretariat.

The State Government was keen on filing the SLP before the Apex Court to seek some kind of relief from the court to ensure justice to farmers who have been protesting seeking water from the Mahadayi river water for the Kalasa-Banduri Nala drinking water project.

An all-party meeting was convened on August 7 and it discussed various options before the state to resolve the water dispute amicably.

Chief minister Siddaramaiah has already written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking the Centre’s intervention to solve the dispute through talks with BJP-ruled Goa Government.
