Typhoon Meranti makes landfall in China

Beijing, Sep 15 (IANS): Typhoon Meranti made landfall in China's Fujian province on Thursday, with gales up to 48 metres per second.

The typhoon has also been monitored as the strongest one hitting southern Fujian since 1949, Xinhua news agency reported citing weather officials.

It hit Xiang'an district of Xiamen city at 3:05 a.m, the officials added.

At around 6 a.m., the winds abated. Streets in Xiamen city were scattered with glass shards and broken tree branches.

The Xiamen Power Supply Company said that the typhoon has made severe damages to the power grid, causing mass blackout.

The electricity supply was also disrupted in Xiamen's outlying islands. As the typhoon was travelling inland, more power damages were likely.
