Indian-origin bus driver burnt alive by passenger in Brisbane, Australia

Brisbane, Oct 28 (Agencies) : A passenger doused a bus driver with an inflammable liquid and burned him to death in front of horrified passengers in the Australian city of Brisbane on Friday, police said.

There was no apparent motive for the killing of the 29-year-old man named by local media as Manmeet Alisher, a well-known singer in the Indian Punjabi community.

Police superintendent Jim Keogh told reporters "it's a horrific incident here in the quiet suburb of Moorooka."

"This is a rare one where it appears to be no apparent motive.

"A bus driver, going about, doing his business, supporting the community, has had his life taken from him in what is a senseless and needless act."

A 48-year-old suspect was arrested at the bus stop and placed in custody.

Bystanders kicked down the back doors of the municipal bus to rescue passengers, who were "traumatised" by the incident, Keogh said.

"It's lucky the whole bus didn't become engulfed in flames," Keogh said.

Around half-a-dozen passengers were aboard the vehicle and some were treated for smoke inhalation.

So many comments against Australia and other western countries but still our people lining up outside their embassy for the Visa. A few months back when USA increased the Visa fee and UK tighten the immigration, there was lot of displeasure by the Indians as if we have the birth right to go and settle in their country and do all illegal business as call centre did a couple of weeks back from Ahmdabad and spoil Indias name. Sad thing is when we were racially humiliated by Australia or any other country no one said "BHARAT MATA KI JAI".
What had happened in Australia is condemnable but same time it is reminding us that the Soul of Stains and his two little sons, still haunting Indians.

Indians are treated much better in any western country than in India . Law is same irrespective of COLOR , caste and religion. High value for human rights. Even animals like dogs cannot be abused or beaten by their masters. If someone call cop, they arrive within minutes. Does these things have in India?

I do not think its a act by mentally unstable maniac .Some people in Australia do not like Indians and they may not be necessarily Australians . In Australia Indian students were ill treated in past and there were few murder incidents too. I had met a maniac From Australia working for a Offshore Contractors in Sharjah .He used to ill treat Indians and was a racist by nature and was finally kicked out ! . Other people from Australia supported him. Iain Chappal also created considerable misunderstanding iN India's Cricket Team. All in All Poor record of human rights!

Words cannot describe this horrible and despicable murder of an innocent man. That murderer must be mentally deranged. How else can one explain. A very similar act occurred in Canada a few years ago. A mentally deranged man cut off the head of a fellow passenger travelling in an overnight bus and dangled the head for the public to see from the bus window! The victim was a Japanese student coming to Ottawa by an overnight bus from Western Canada. The murder was convicted after a quick trial but was pronounced not guilty by reason of insanity. These incidents are very rare, but it contradicts theories that it is the work of the devil...The devil is a human being personified. Pictures of ISIS beheading captives come to haunt me.

Dr. Prabhu, what you have said is true. A person who has GOD in his personal life will show compassion and lift a falling person whereas a person possessed with the devil will kick the fallen person. We can't categorize every inhuman action of human beings as " insanity ".

I do remember a few years back while going by train from Toronto to Montreal to see the fertile land, when the breakfast was served, neither I had proper change nor the vender. Instantly a person sitting across me said " you are my guest today and he paid for my breakfast". He was a teacher in Montreal and I gave my telephone number and e-mail address offered my hospitality whenever he comes to the U.S. in our area. He replied, thank you and said " it was my pleasure to be a host for my good neighbor country". Our simple act of courtesy if we can do everyday in some way, we can build a better world of peace of happiness.

Most people migrate for different reasons but one distinctive reason is that those countries have very good public systems in place. Quality of life in general is mostly good and peaceful. This horrifying act is condemn-able is rare and must be an act by mentally unstable person. It is really sad that a young life is snuffed out by thoughtless barbaric act. His family will take a very long time to get over this trauma.
