Mangalore, Feb 20: After one and half year, a passenger ship from Lakshadweep has come to old port here. ‘Dweep Setu,’ which has a capacity of 150 passengers, reached the city shores on Tuesday February 19. It will continue to be the centre of attention till Thursday February 21 before beginning its journey from here.

Lakshadweep is located at a distance of about 144 nautical miles from here. Though no special permission is needed to travel to Lakshadweep, the ship had stopped its service about one and half year ago. One can travel to Lakshadweep at a cost of Rs 100. Persons who travel frequently between Lakshadweep and Mangalore and those who have business ties with the two places were demanding the recommencement of the ship service. But the demand was not fulfilled for a long time.

As many as 10 islands of Lakshadweep are populated. Except fish and coconut, the residents are forced to purchase all the other goods from outside. At present they are purchasing goods from Mangalore and Cochin.

The ten islands are Kiltan, Chetla, Kadamatta, Amesa, Agathi, Kavaratti, Androth, Kalloni, Pilikoyi and Mithra. These islands are also called ‘golden islands’ for their mesmerizing beauty. No doubt, these islands can be developed in to tourism spots. Therefore, passenger ships are necessary to connect Lakshadweep and other islands, many opine.

Most of the goods are transported to Lakshadweep from the city's old harbor. Owing to silt, movement of cargo ships also becomes tough, some complain.

The ship will reach the city again on Sunday February 24. Mangaloreans who want to visit Lakshadweep should obtain permission from Cochin where the office related to Lakshadweep travel is located. This has proved cumbersome for Mangaloreans. Hence, locals here are demanding the set up of a separate office for this purpose.

These palm-tree covered, coral islands have beautiful lagoons and are an attractive and peaceful place. xe "Lakshadweep"Lakshadweep consists of 36 islands located between 200km and 300km off the Kerala coast. These islands are coral islands, northern extension of the Maldives. Ten of the islands are inhabited: Andrott, Amini, Agatti, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti (headquarters), Kiltan, and Minicoy. Lakshadweep is a Union Territory of India.

At the present time, foreign tourists must stay at the Bangaram Island Resort managed by the Casino Hotel group, on the island of Bangaram, a 6km by 10km island. Malayalam is the language spoken on the islands except for the island of Minicoy, where the people speak Mahi, the language spoken in the Maldives. 93% of the population is Muslim belonging to the Shafi School of the Sunni sect. The main source of income is fishing and the production of coir.

History It is said that a marabout (a Muslim saint) was shipwrecked on the island of Amini in the 7th century.   After much effort he was able to convert the residents of the island to become Muslims. He was buried on the island of Andrott and his grave is considered to be a holy site. At that time the Hindu Raja of Chitakkal ruled these islands. In the 16th century, Lakshadweep came under the rule of the Muslim rulers of Kannur, and in 1783 Tipu Sultan. After the British defeated Tipu in 1799, the islands came under the control of the East India Company. It was made a Union Territory in 1956. Information Foreign tourist must have a permit to visit. The Casino Hotel (0484 668-221 fax 668-001), Willingdon Island, Kochi, can arrange for a permit within a few days. Bangaram has excellent beaches and beautiful lagoons. A boon to the Mangaloreans who want to visit Lakshadweep. But, please make sure that a booking/information office be opened in Mangalore also. Having an office in Cochin is not advisable for Mangaloreans.Anyway, all the best and let the the ship not stop its service any more.
