Mangalore, Feb 29: “The great strength of India is its unity in diversity and every Indian needs to protect and maintain it,” opined Prof B K Chandrashekar, speaker of Legislative Council, government of Karnataka.

He was addressing the gathering at the civic reception of ‘Mandd Sobhann’ at Town Hall on Friday February 29 for achieving the unique feat of enterting in to the Guinness Book of World Records through 44-hour singing marathon 'Konkani Nirantari' by multiple singers.

Commending the efforts of ‘Mandd Sobhann’, professor said “by setting the Guinness Record, it has re-written the profile of Konkani language.  It was the willingness and determination of organizers to achieve such milestone that propelled Konkani to such great heights.  However, the present generation does not like classical music and is more inclined towards racy, pop type of music.  In the context of globalization, ‘Mandd Sobhann’ has rightfully achieved a significant place for Konkani language in the world literary sphere."

Referring to the recent spate of violence in the region, Prof Chandrashekar said that it is the common man who suffers the most during the communal violence.  Political parties exploit people's religious sentiments for their own gains. Hence it is good for the people that they realize the folly of politicians, he advised.

Everyone should understand that no religion preaches violence and advocates bloodshed. The attitude of branding a particular religion and followers of faith as terrorists must be stopped at the earliest, he opined.

Ronald Colaco, industrialist presided over the programme. P K Sucharitha Shetty, president of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat, B Ramanath Rai, former minister, K Abhayachandra Jain, former MLA of Moodbidri, U T Khader, former MLA of Ullal, Ganesh Hosabettu, mayor of Mangalore City Corporation were present on the dais.

Ivan D'Souza, Congress leader welcomed the gathering on behalf of the organizers.

Eric Ozario is the visionary of Mandd Sobhann and crusader of Konkani culture; without him and the organizers, Konkani would not have reached the global exposure with Konkani Nirantari, said Ivan D’Souza, in his welcome address.

He presented a cheque of Rs 20,000 to Mandd Sobhann on the occasion.

Prof B K Chandrashekar felicitated president of Mandd Sobhann Louie J Pinto and Pirgent Eric Ozario by draping the shawl and placing traditional head gear of Karnataka on them besides the citation letter and mementos.

Mayor Ganesh Hosabettu felicitated other members of working committee of Konkani Nirantari.  Ganesh Hosabettu applauded Mandd Sobhann's efforts in keeping Konkani language and culture live.

Eric Ozario in his thanksgiving address said “the people, who do not recognize their heroes, do not have the future.  But, since Mangaloreans in general have recognized their efforts of Konkani Nirantari, I could see hope for Mangalore.

Concepta Alva compered the entire programme. The grand traditional welcome was accorded to Mandd Sobhann troupe for their marvelous entry in the Guinness Book of World Records.  Prakash Kadri and Concepta Alva introduced Eric Ozario and Louie J Pinto to the audience.

The felicitation ceremony concluded with a musical programme by the local artistes.
