Mangalore, Apr 4: Eminent Kannada scholar Prof Ki Ram Nagaraj has said that social awareness was sharper in Kanakadasa than in any other Keerthankaras of his time.
Speaking at ‘Kanaka Smrithi’ organized by the Kanakadasa Adhyayana Peetha at Mangalore University here on Thursday April 3, he said, ‘his keerathanas, which condemned the exploitation of upper class people on commoners, reflected great thought.' He became socially relevant by growing out of his personal pains, Prof Nagaraj added.
Kanaka not only opposed war but also the utilitarian culture in the society. Both war and luxurious life style are prominent problems of modern times, said Prof Ki Ram. He also criticised the increasing trend of aping tunes of the noted musicians of olden times by present day musicians.
Convener Pratapchandra Shetty Halnadu, scholar Bannanje Govindacharya and Kanakadasa Adhyayana Peetha chairman Dr Shivaram Shetty were present.
