Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (GA)

Mangalore, Apr 26: Consultant cardiologists of KMC Hospital, Ambedkar Circle (Jyothi), here Dr Yusuf Kumble and Dr Narsimha Pai have successfully accomplished the feat of perhaps the first carotid angioplasty in city on. The patient was a 61-year-old Abdul Gaffur who complained of numbness and weakness in right hand and was diagnosed of TIA (Transient Ischemic attack). Investigations including CT scan, Doppler and angiogram revealed a block in left brain vessel.

A team of doctors led by Dr Yusuf Kumble and Dr Narsimha Pai have successfully performed carotid angioplasty in the patient.

Stroke is the second commonest cause of cardio vascular deaths. Traditionally it was being treated by surgical removal of the plaque. It can also be removed using interventional technique by passing very tiny wire through the blood vessel and removing the cholesterol deposition through a balloon. Filter is inserted distal to the block to prevent clot going into the brain. A stent is placed in that position to prevent further deposition.

This procedure is safe and effective and is performed under local anesthesia. The patient can be discharged within 24 hours of the procedure.
