Panaji, Aug 2: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday August 2 said that the Mahadeyi river dispute issue with Karnataka and Maharashtra cannot be handled on party lines as the interest of particular state is involved in it.
Parrikar said that Karnataka is trying to plant “ecological bomb” on Goa through damming of the Mahadeyi river waters upstream.
“There are certain issues that cannot be dealt with the governments based on a party lines. Where there is interest of the State, all the MLAs will have to be together,” the Chief Minister said responding to a Zero Hour mention on the floor of the House today.
Parrikar said that he could try to speak to the Maharashtra counterpart and convince him on the issue. “But it is the dispute so you cannot handle it on the party lines,” the chief minister said.
He said that he himself will also not like to deal this issue on party basis as “it is concerning the interest of Goa.”
As far as Karnataka is concerned, Parrikar said, the state is going to face the elections so there will be lot of up-manship in the State in the run up to the polls.
The Chief minister accused Karnataka of “not telling all the truth”. “We brought this issue before the Water Dispute Tribunal where we proved that Karnataka is not telling all the truth,” he said.
Parrikar said that Mahadeyi (which is known as Mandovi in Goa) has 78 per cent of its basin in Goa. “Of total all the river basins in Goa, 47 per cent is that of Mahadeyi,” he said.
He stated that the damming the water upstream will increase salinity in the rivers of state and also ecologically affect the areas up to Western Ghat. “This is ecological bomb that Karnataka is planting in the forms of dams,” the Chief minister said on the floor of the House.
Claiming that Goa government has designed certain strategies to tackle the water dispute, Parrikar refused to reveal them in public. He alleged that when it comes to water, Karnataka has problem with several states as the state (Karnataka) is not interested in understanding how best the water can be used.
