Bantwal: Attempt at religious conversion - two women taken into custody

Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal (SP)

Bantwal, Sep 6: On Tuesday September 5, activists of local pro-Hindu organizations caught hold of two women, who were allegedly involved with efforts at religious conversion at Uggabettu in Kavalapadoor village. The women were handed over to the rural police station at Bantwal.

Mercy from Bejai Mangaluru and Roselina who hails from near Vittal in the taluk, who are said to be volunteers belonging to an organization known as 'New Life', have been accused of visiting homes of Hindus in Uggabettu area and distributing pamphlets created by their organization.

The activists complained that these women went to about five to six houses belonging to Hindu families when male members of these families were away, distributed pamphlets brought out by their organization, and tried to convince the people present there to get converted into their religion. Some activists involved with Hindu organizations who came to know about the incident, rushed to the spot, and questioned the accused women. As the women failed to provide convincing replies, the young activists developed suspicion about their motive and handed them over to police station with the help of local women.

The activists also visited the rural police station here and registered a complaint there about the incident. It is gathered that the police subjected both the women to intensive questioning and released them after duly warning against indulging in such activities. The police did not find any literature or books relating to religious conversion with the women.

@H.d souza,Kodagu, dear Mr de souza, why should one report to police? They are doing their duty ,but you are not forced by them.propaganda material too ,they can carry and distribute it.You too can go about and can do the same.noone can go against it.but please no force.we are in a demokratic land ,and can live your religion open.when a person is not steady in his religion, might convert. If someone finds otheer religion is better, can try it .they are not children .some do convert to other religion like jain,,while it is peaceful is.or muslim.when one dont want to listen ,just tell you dont need the info.finished.Even these hindu people have no right to take them in custody.police self are not doing their duty good. They should have taken these two in custody for taking law in their hands.police support them ,thats why they are becoming thundu Rajas. Here too women are coming with material for distribution.

    Is propagation of religion illegal?

Our police are good for nothing. The police have no right to take them in custody, rather have to provide the protection to carry out their rights.

Propogation of religion should be made illegal unless the propagators show us the heavenly beuaties & burning hell. Thhey should give proof for their claims. otherwise it looks they are interested in numbers for some gains. If the propogator tells morals for eg about the happiness of helpping others then its OK. but let it be restricted to that only.

    Rajesh,

Proof or no proof..... they have right to propagate their religion. And for your information, a right mentioned in a constitution cannot be made illegal.

I am an atheist. I don't care about any religious beliefs and I think they are stupid.

I can't believe that I have got so many dislikes for such a straight forward comment. I believe our educational system is flawed.

Further more I would like to add that its challenging to live among people who are clearly showing signs of IQ deficiency.

Since from my childhood i am discussing & mingling with my Hindu, Christian, Muslim, Jain, Buddhist friends and none of us converted or compromised our faith.
We had a good fun, strong team, enjoyed every festivals including we cheat temple priest and eat prasada/Laddos and still the memories remain.
We exchanged our thoughts without fear and we converted our self as a better Hindu, A better Christian, a better Muslim and a better Humans for a meaningful living.
I failed to understand what is conversion, when My God, My Spirit, My Body is with me.

This new life will go to Hindu homes for conversion as they know Hindus are by and large not fundamentalists. would they dare to go to muslim homes in say mallapuram and come back unscathed. Here the Hindu organisations only handed them to police. but had it been some muslim mohallas i shudder to think the outcome.

The people who publicize adopted religion (believers) on others and those who fall victim or accept are not true believers in their born religion at all. How can they substantiate their claim? That is called blind belief and not true belief.
Such people should be properly warned and or punished.
So many Christian families are going through such non-related religion issue all over.

Just wanted to re-iterate the point that this so called 'New Life' group does not belong to the mainstream Christians. They seem to have formed this group with their own interests. So it is very important to for all of us to understand that Christians in general should not be held responsible for this propaganda by New Life. Well its a different issue if we the mainstream Christians indulge in any such activities of forced/vested interest conversions and it should be condemned too. But at the same time people should be given the freedom to practice/convert to any religion as far as it does not interfere or disturb people following any other faith. Unfortunately not every one is wise enough to think independently and hence we have to only pray that people use their own wisdom in deciding which faith to follow.

There are several priority issues to be discussed and sorted out like, Children Health, malnutrition, Medical facilities, Education, Infrastructure, unemployment, Job creation, etc etc..
Why wasting time and resource on Conversion and animal issues?? Without discounting these, let us learn to prioritise and move towards progress.
Why to worry about who follows what and who eats what when there are many more vital pressing issues of citizens???
Think wise and create a better future for our own generations to come...

Why one is concerned about others converting to the religion of their choice? I wouldn't mind, if someone is trying to convert me to devil worshiping. It is my choice. With due respect to their belief, I would politely say NO because my faith is strongly rooted in me as I believe the Son of God, Jesus Christ, is only God. I will try to spread HIS good words to others and it is up to them to accept it. Why others make a issue out of it? Do they own the religion? Well, is it a religion or their way of living?

Police were compelled to leave them after intensive questioning. They did not find possession of any prohibited or dangerous materials, no weapons, no anti-national literature, no complaints from those who were being preached, no hate speeches and no complaints of forcible conversion. Under what sections of IPC do you think police can put them behind bars for lifetime?

Mario, Lalbagh, you are right because of these NEW LIFE AND DEAD LIFE in 2008, udupi and mangalore had a bad time..catholic churches were attacked... many got beaten up....all innocent Catholics.
All because the other religions do not know that NEW LIFE TEAM IS NOT PART OF CATHOLIC CHRISTIANS AT ALL.... they are to be banned ...they beg door to door for getting people join their team and take commission for adding numbers....it is a business.
I SUPPORT THE OTHER RELIGIOUS TEAM TO BE ACTIVE IN CONDEMNING THESE NONSENSE WAY OF ADDING TEAM MEMBERS AND SPOIL THE NAME OF REAL CHRISTIANS.
