Mangalore: Police Bribed Rs 10 lac to Cover Up Safiya Murder Case?

Kasargod, Jul 5: Crime branch officials have revealed, that the arrested accused in the case relating to inhuman slaying of minor Safiya, Hamza, has claimed to have paid ten lakh rupees to the police officials for covering up the murder.
An investigation team headed by DySP Santosh Kumar alongwith Kannur crime branch superintendent of police K P Philip and other officials are now on a visit to Goa to unearth evidence relating to the murder of Safiya. They have taken Hamza and Abdulla along for helping them in this task. Now, efforts to dig out the mortal remains of Safiya, buried by Hamza with the help of his accomplice Abdulla, are on. Once the work is done, the remains will be handed over to Kozhikode Medical College forensic expert Dr Sherley Vasu and chief biologist of Kerala Police Academy Annamma John, who have also gone to Goa, for testing.

Investigations will, apart from the murder angle, also centre around the question of whether any sexual atrocities were committed on the girl before murdering her. The team is minutely verifying the genuineness of the statements given by Hamza and his wife Maimoona, regarding Safiya's death. Now, inquiries are being conducted on the veracity of the claim by Hamza that he had paid ten lakh rupees as bribe to silence the police investigators. Hamza reportedly said, that he paid Rs 1.5 lakhs to the previous superintendent of police, two lakh rupees to the two DySPs, Rs 75,000 to Adoor assistant sub inspector Gopalakrishna and Rs.1,75,000 to the three police constables in Adoor police station. Inspector General Shantaram has been appraised of the matter.

It is also claimed, that a relative was paid money to make him say that he had seen Hamza returning to Mastikundu alongwith Safiya. The crime branch has found that a sum of Rs 4.5 lakhs was transferred to the account of the said relative from Hamza's account, purportedly for getting contract licence. Safiya's father Moidu, brother Abdurrahiman, Mohammed, uncle Sulaiman, Samad and others too have gone to Goa.
