Mangalore: Fr Sylvester D'Souza Breathes his Last

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 23: Fr Sylvester D'Souza(80), who was born at Shirtadi Anegudde on October 28, 1928 and ordained as a priest of Mangalore diocese on February 2, 1957, breathed his last at Father Muller's Hospital Mangalore after a brief illness, on July 23, 2008.

The late Fr Sylvester D'Souza, after being ordained into the priesthood, functioned as assistant priest at Kinnigoly, as chaplain at St Cicily Udupi and a parish priest at Pius Nagar, Shirva, Karkala town and Barkur, before retiring on May 24, 2004. Thereafter, he spiritually served Mt Rosary Institute of Moodbidri-Alangar for four years before settling down at 'Vinanni Home' Mangalore, the home for the retired priests.

He was the eldest of seven children of Antony and Lucy D'Souza from Shirtadi. Another of his brothers Fr John Cyrian D'Souza is serving as priest at Kolkata. Fr Sylvester had great love and concern for the children. He set up AICUFF in Mangalore and through it, provided proper guidance to thousands of youth. He played a major role in setting up Don Bosco Club in Udupi and had built 'Christ Church' for the people coming to Manipal from all over the country and abroad. He was very active in inter-community related issues and debates.

The final rites of Fr Sylvester will be held at Valencia church on Friday, July 25 at 4 pm.

Seeing Fr. Sylvester lying down in eternal sleep in Valencia church, was a flashback of AICUF days and I could not control my emotions. The funeral was largely attended as expected. He carried the AICUF single handedly in the 70s and the 80s and people like me owe a lot to him for what we are today. May his soul rest in peace.

I had the privilege of meeting Fr Sylvester D’souza when I was studying in Shirva Don Bosco school. Fr. Sylvester D’souza is a humble and helping hand to all the communities of people, especially he was very lovable to the children and to the poor people. He was a great lover of Plants and flowers. I remember those days he arranged medical camps on every Wednesday in Shirva. Hundreds of poor people made use of these medical camps. And now Fr. Sylvester has entered Jesus house May his soul rest in peace and our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the members of his family.

Father Sylvester took a lot of interest in Catholic Students especially when he was Karnataka Regional Chaplain of AICUF. His constant touch with students in and around suratkal resulted in establishment of Suratkal Unit of AICUF. AICUF gave us exposure to various students' activities at State and National levels. Thanks to his guidance we developed organisation and communication skills. We started our own news letter "Uzwad" from Suratkal Unit. I am personally indebted to AICUF and Father Sylvester for the right guidance during my student days in terms of leadership, organisational skills and Christian Values May his soul rest in peace

I have very fond memories of Fr. Sylvester who was a fatherly figure to most of us. A few things that strike me most about his personality are that he cared for the poor and the marginalized he was a lover of nature (we could see many flower plants, especially 'jeenia', all around) he was a linguist, so much so that he introduced prayers and the Holy Eucharist in non-Konkani languages (e.g. Kannada and Tulu) he lived a very simple life, etc. May God grant him eternal rest.

Our Heartfelt Condolences on the sad demise of Fr. Sylvester D'Souza. There are no words to describe Fr. Sylvester, as he was such a down to earth person, who served Lord and helped a lot of poor people without prejudice to their status, religion, caste and moreover he loved all those people who came to him for help. His life reminds me of Jesus Christ, as he was always a peoples man, He showed genuine concern to people and their well being.

My first encounter with him was during 1986, when he visited our AICUF unit in the capacity of State AICUF Director and we spent couple of days with him in Karkala and then a week in Fatima Retreat House during state level Seminar. I cannot forget the way he used to inspire each one of us in the Group through his talks, encouragement and love that he shared with us. He was loved by all and today, when I read the news of his demise, few tears rolled down from my eyes without my knowledge, as I remembered him offering our wedding nuptial mass in 1999, in Karkala Church. May his soul rest in peace and our sincere and heafelt condolences to the members of his family.

FR SYLVESTER DSOUZA WAS A WELL -KNOWN FIGURE AMONG THE YOUTH. HIS LOVE FOR LITTLE CHILDREN WAS SO MUCH THAT HE USED TO DISTRIBUTE BALLOONS & CHOCOLATES WHILE HE WAS THE CHAPLAIN OF ST CECILY'S CONVENT ie in the early 70's IF I AM NOT MIASTAKEN. THUS HE WAS POPULARLY CALLED "BALLOON FATHER" BY THE LIITLE CHILDREN OF ST CECILY'S CONVENT SCHOOL . I REMEMBER MY CHILDHOOD DAYS HOW I USED TO RUN TO HIM TO WISH HIM A " GOOD MORNING FATHER" AND IN RETURN I WOULD GET A WHISTLE OR A CHOCOLATE . His days in Barkur, though very short, i.e. just above two years, as parish priest, was marked by peace and harmony in the locality and especially, his motivation, concern and support to youth activities during ICYM Silver Jubilee days in 2002, still fresh in our memories. He lived a long and dedicated spotless life, of 80 years in the service of God and men. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace. On behalf of ICYM Barkur Ex-Member’s Association, P.
