Centre Warns Orissa, Karnataka over Attack on Christians

Times of India

NEW DELHI, Sep 19: Centre on Thursday issued a warning to NDA-controlled governments of Orissa and Karnataka under Article 355 to rein in violence against Christians, in an action which will be praised as appropriate in many quarters but will sharpen the UPA vs NDA faultlines.

While BJP condemned the action as ''partisan'', Congress welcomed it with glee.

Article 355 vests emergency powers in the Centre to ensure adherence to the Constitution and it can even be seen as a precursor to the application of Article 356 (President's rule). But in the current context, it also serves the political purpose.

Importantly, with the government acting against the Opposition governments over violence against minorities by RSS affiliates, it could clear the way for a tougher response against terrorism.

There has been a strong voice in Congress and UPA that fight against terror should go hand in hand with tough action against communal violence. The anti-Christian riots have spread fast from Orissa to Karnataka and even in Kerala, in what is seen as part of a campaign.

The argument was also articulated by minority affairs minister A R Antulay at Wednesday's Cabinet meeting where he said the Centre should bring in a tough law on communal riots.

For the Centre, buffeted between demands for tough laws against terror and the sensitivities that there should be safeguards to ensure that they are not misused against minorities, it could be part of the Manmohan Singh government unveiling an all-round action plan against violence.

Congress welcomed the action, with party spokesman Veerappa Moily saying that it was ''a shame on BJP''. He said, ''Those who are talking of fighting terrorism are not in a position to contain communal terrorism.''

But the BJP reacted strongly. Party general secretary Arun Jaitley said, ''The action is unwarranted. Orissa has taken steps and succeeded in restoring peace. Karnataka government is trying its best by appealing to one section not to bring out inflammatory pamphlets on conversions and taking steps to convince the other sections not to attack prayer halls. The Centre's action makes it obvious that it is not interested in resolving the issue but in politicising it. Why does not the Centre consider similar action in case of Maharashtra government with regard to its inability to deal with Raj Thackeray's repeated provocations.''

Centre was soft on dreaded Bajrangdal and other Sang Parivar groups. These nasty groups have attacked our churches and destroyed peace in Dakshina Kannada and Orissa. The centre should ban the Sang Parivar outfits and then only there will be peace. I hope all secular Hindus will demand a complete ban on these anti-social sang parivar groups. Jai Hind.

Respected readers, lets examine the dual policy of Congress when it comes to Hindus. We have BOMB BLASTS in Dehli and various parts of country. Amarnath and Kashmir, Nandigram etc...all these where people died and are dying and Congress is mum.How many people died in Mangalore? Is this bigger than the tragic bomb blast that occured in capital? These kind of statements are alientaing hindu's from congress party, as Congress has no regards for Hindus at all. Congress leaders have least regards for security of the country and will never condemn NEW LIFE which started this problem in Mangalore. All I can request Congress is not do this as we Hindus will get more and more closer to BJP. Please CONDEMN NEW LIFE equally.

this is a good gesture from the Central Government. More important is that based on the pamplets or brochures that said have been distributed which said to contain articles hurting Hindus - FIRST AND FOREMOST caught such people who have distributed it, possess it and also the publisher/printer. Has any one claimed ownership of this? Why not this is printed by VHP / Bajarangdal / Sanghpariwar group just to creat a reasoning. All this is bogus and shameless. We catholics who are peace lovers and hear the Sermons from our revered priests in Holy Mass and Retreats where it is taught Love thy neighbours. I am practicing it at office, neighbourhood and all those I come across and so also the case with my fellow christian brethern. No. No. You people have hurted our feelings and the incident remains as a night mare especially to our innocent children. Yes. Yes. Solidariy shown by our nuns, women and youngsters by bowing down to the brutality of Police and the unity by the parishioners by a mere church bell call is praise worthy. Long live Christanity. May God Bless all.

They are using the openness of Hindus. We hindus always oppose whenever our own people do wrong things. Here Catholics never openly opposed the conversions done by New Life and other sects, rather silently supported them. This is the difference, they are slow poisons in our Indian society.

Mr. Manmohan Singh, This question from people of india ask the Centre why it did not use Article 355 when Hindi-speaking people were massacred in Assam. Why did the Centre did not use Article 355 when blood continued to be spilled in Nandigram for months and why it never thought of using 355 in Jammu Kashmir where lot of terror attacks take place .

The central Govt. should not only warn state Govt. But it should give deadline and if ot action taken by State govt. President Rule should be applied. But no power should be given to Police as they act as agent of BD. Army should be called for law and order maintenance. I feel Central Govt. should put President Rule in Both state.

I wrote yesterday but my letter was not published. What I said was the governments in Orissa and Karnataks should be dismissed immediately if they cannot guarantee communal harmony. Alternatively the Bajrang Dal and the VHP should be banned and proscribed as terrorist & militant organisations just like the terrorists like the LTTE, Simi and the rest.

Its incredible I work in Dubai(and we have total freedom to practise our religion in a muslim country) live in New Zealand (where no religious bigotry is tolerated) and yet in India we are treated so badly despite being guaranteed religious freedom by the Constitution. Remember Christains give and forgive, the rest take and forget. We want to live in peace and I hope those fanatics understand.

Manmohan singh can say all he wants. If he does not take action then this is of no use. I feel that this is a game played by the congress to get mileage or to dislodge BJP in the state. Why would BJP want to mess up the situation when they are in power. Isn't it natural to do this when you are out?. Congress knows the sentiments of BJP and it's so called wing BD. Instigate a communal violence and then sabotage the govt..!!. Next move will be for Oscar / George and Sonia to visit mangalore - Congress is currently worried about the triumph that the current govt. had and they will go all out to tarnish this image, including disrupting the peace that prevailed in the society, mostly due to the nature of the mangalore Christians.

We never assumed, in a democratic India we would actual see a time when such atrocities would be carried out on Christians. We are a peaceful minority and never have been a part of any riots, blast, terrorism of any form…..Also after all happening in Orissa, Karnataka and spreading to Kerala, we have not retaliated by coming out and burning temples or mosque. If anything I believe all should actually look up to us and ask “what is it that our churches are actually teaching us”. It is teaching us love, It is teaching us peace. It is teaching us to respect other people and their religion. Our religion is based on the Ten Commandments. A few to mention do not use the name of the lord your God in vain (3 commandment) (This is highly appropriate for the NDA govt. “Please do not use religion as a base to win votes of the people) and do not murder (6 commandment). As Christ as said Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' I think if everybody followed just this…. Love their God… The teaching of their religion and if they loved their neighbor as they loved themselves…. This world would be a beautiful place. To sum it all up I don’t think any religion teaches destroy places of worship or kill innocent people… I would ask every individual responsible to ask themselves. “Is this what our religion is teaching or am I doing this because some self centered people want to be in power. Am I actually following the teaching of religion or am I listening to the party leaders who for their selfish motive are behind all this. What am I actually getting by doing all this. Am I getting inner peace, love and happiness….

Yes, it is part of BJP campaign, prior to election. For them Christian community does not react in any situation. They never expected this reaction, as many such incidents earlier in Karkala and elsewhere gone frozen. Initially on Sunday their claim was forcible conversion, when no evidence found to support it, some printed material brought in, and till now nobody could manage to get any evidence or proof of its origin. Somebody must have given this printed material to someone. Please expose him instead of blaming the whole community. Advani’s vision is to become Prime Minister no matter at what cost. This is what planned in Bangalore.

Nobody has moral right to talk about Communalism, Mob Terrorism, Goondaism, Bomb Terrorism. We have seen the Bad of Congress/UPA during the death Indira Gandhi when the Sikhs were butchered. Conviction rate of those involved is Zero and they walking with Head HIgh. There is nothing Special of NDA Govt or BJP Govt. No party has been able to control these attacks in any form. Will NDA/UPA or any parties join the together to solve these issues which is making the life of Innocent Civilian Miserable. They will not because every party ultimate goal is to acquire power by Hook or by Crook. Mark my Words - The Worst is Yet to Come. It is time that we catholics in and around D.K. make full preparations of Self Defence. We cannot depend on these politicians/Police etc to give us protections as the Protection Law is only for the Political Parties/Politicians. Mr. Manmohan Singh, your tainted party is in Coma everywhere. You will not be a future prime Minister anymore, so do whatever you like to do. Your party cannot protect anyone in India as it seems your party itself supports all kind of violence in India & from there your party tries to gain something. No one has any faith in the Congress & it's UPA allies since all of you made India a big hell from past four years. Take action on Terrorism first than talking about other things. I kindly ask you one thing why you didn't serve notice to West Bengal govt. for the violence in NandiGram which killed soo many farmers & raped many. Where were you when MNS inducted in violence on North Indians in Mumbai, are you a mute spectator for this??? Nothing like that happened in Karnataka.
