Udupi: NH 66 road work nearing completion - increasing accidents cause of concern

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jun 26: After a long wait due to various reasons, the widening work of national highway 66 is nearing completion. But figures relating to accidents which have taken place between the 25 kilometres stretch of the highway between Hejamady and Udyavar near here during the last 27 months give cause for grave concern.

During the period from January 2016 to March 2018, 265 accidents happened as per the records maintained in Kaup and Padubidri police stations. 76 persons died and 297 suffered injuries of varying degrees. These accidents reveal that Udyavar - Korangrapady Junction, road in front of Halima Sabju Hall at Udyavar, Udyavar Junction, Udyavar bridge, Katpadi forest gate, Tekal Thota, Katapadi junction, Kallapu bridge, Kambala Gadde, Pangala Kattikere, Vidyavarhaka school, Pangala temple, Pangala bridge, Uliyargoli, Polipu-Uchila-Muloor junction, Uchila town, Uchila - Paniyuru junction, Uchila - Yermal junction, Yermal mosque, Naralthaya shrine, Padubidri town and Beedubadi, as well as Hejamady Junction, have been the spots which have become notorious for frequent accidents.

One of the major causes for these accidents is the lack of proper service roads at places where rural roads join the highway. The people, either for want of service road or to avoid taking a long detour, try to drive their vehicles on the wrong side of the road to save in distance and fuel and become victims of accidents. It is a common scene for two wheelers to break the rules and cross to the other side of the road through dividers.

On account of high rate of accidents and injuries, this stretch of the highway has been earning a bad name. A report about the accident zones here had been sent to the department of highways but the department has not initiated any step to address the issues, make changes in the design or widen the highways at the said spots. The police say that they have been taking all precautions to avoid the accidents and that the deputy commissioner of the district has also been informed about the steps to be taken to regulate accidents.

An auto driver, Anil Shetty, says that non-construction of bus stands at various spots on the highway has been giving rise to confusions and accidents. He blames improper connecting roads and inadequate dividers for a number of deaths and injuries. He suggests the police to keep constant vigil at notorious junctions and install CCTV cameras to bring culprits to book.

Kaup police circle inspector, Halamurthy Rao, says that his department has undertaken various measures like erection of barricades in dangerous circles, imposing penalty on people moving on wrong side of the road, installation of warning signs, and educating people. He feels that if the vehicle drivers take proper care and precautions to save their own lives, many of the accidents and injuries can be avoided.

High Time Technology is used in tracking vehicle speed and behavior on road. Our average Speed is very low and we are reducing it further by placing barricades and Road humps.

Auto tracking and Auto penalty will be of GREAT HELP!

Good that the current NDA government is pushing for completion of many road projects. One big disappoint is that service roads are not created throughout the Mangalore-Kundapur stretch. It was part of the original plan. The service roads are a must in this part of the region as there is lot of local traffic movement. Apart from this, there is need for construction of more number of pedestrian bridges and few more fly-overs at the right locations. Bus bays and rickshaw/taxi stands should be near on the side of service road and not directly on the side the main 4 lane high-way for better movement of vehicles.

Yes, there are few draw backs in the designing & construction. Such as :-
No proper Signal at the Junctions, Flyovers for Highway/direct Traffic, under pass or sky walk for pedastrians, No service road in some ares so vehicles are driven as they wish, No designated Bus Stops on the Road, Trucks Parked on the road...............
Above all reckless driving, no one follows the Traffic Rules........

Recently while travelling on Mumbai-Pune Expressway, I've seen police busy taking action vehicles that were parked on the road and trucks using the fast lane. Though NH66 is not an expressway, such similar steps can be taken by the local police to curtail accidents.

Regarding Accidents, it has less to blame the NHAI as at many places the roads construction plan had to be modified so as to hear the locals demand . Bus stands were not allowed to move few meters away as it affected businesses. Also required U-turns at most junctions . Many places the junctions, U-turn, Bustands, Service roads entries all made to enter at same area which leads to conjestion, accidents

Few examples are Katapadi, Santhekatte, etc. At Santhekatte earlier when two-way one had to be vigilant on the higway and the road joing from kallianpur. But now vehicles has to be observed from both directions one ways of NH as vehicle s do approach on wrong side + vehicles from Kalianpur junction + service roads as vehicle merge from malpe road + U turns + Bustand

People needs to learn from forien roads and driving laws

//It is a common scene in Hejamady-Padubidri lane.

Buses, trucks, cars coming from Padubidri to Hejamady, drive in wrong side and causes threat to other vehicles.

Regret to say - driving on the wrong side of the road does not make the perpetrators 'Victims'. They are the cause of accidents.

It is very good we r having good NH 66road
It is everyone s responsiblity to drive slowly and safely
And highway authority should mark The lanes for different speeds and also heavy vehicles
Should move in slow speed lane
Then over taking become s easy for high speed vehicle's

For the entire stretch from Padubidri onwards to Udupi, "the rules are that there are no rules".
Of course, these locals will now come with a multi-million dollar solution....speed bumps...reduce your speed to enable them to break rules at will!!!

People used to driving on potholed roads are not used to driving on good roads and it will take time for them to learn. Each one thinks that he is a Louis Hamilton on these roads. It is like mangana kaiyalli manikya……...

I blame the system, cos a driver gets license with minimum qualifications such just learning the signs and moving forward and backward..that is it.

    Missing lessons are:
    1. keeping distance from the front vehicle
    2. entering the main road
    3. passing through a roundabout
    4. lane rules
    5. road markings
    6. etc.

Accidents are increasing simply because it's completely unscientific, barely any street lights, water logging everywhere, uneven layered at many places, small bridges and roads with uneven heights, debris from the rivers not cleared and a bad eye sore, guard rails only at few places, already a feet deep potholes everywhere, over that to cover up the unscientific work, unscientific barricades placement every where and people donate with advertisement!!!. Over all this 4 lane road is not haBing any standard even per Indian leave alone international standards!!!. Don't know who has approved the quality of work!. Only toll collection charges are better than international levels!

Spot on! The criteria and Tests to avail a driving licence should be improved.
And the best Drivers in Mangalore are Auto-Drivers and Local Bus-Drivers(Pun Intented)
