Panaji, Nov 17: A senior Bharatiya janata party (BJP) leader in the state has feared that the state government might witness a 'backlash', if the incidents of idol desecration continues at the current pace.
"If the desecration continues at such a pace, it could lead to religious upheaval and could burst into a spontaneous outburst of anger by the people," BJP leader and leader of opposition Manohar Parrikar said briefing presspersons here this evening.
The BJP leader was perturbed over the increasing idol desecration incidents in the state. On Monday November 17 another idol was desecrated at Taleigao village, on Panaji's outskirts, lengthening the list of desecration incidents.
The state recently had witnessed BJP-supported bundh protesting against the incidents.
"If things continue like this the congress leaders will have to face a backlash," Parrikar, former state chief minister, said.
The BJP leader also warned Congress leaders in the state against pushing Hindus to the brink by their inaction over the incidents.
He alleged that there is a systematic planning behind these acts to disturb the communal harmony in the state. Parrikar, earlier, had accused Indian Mujahiddin-style outfits of executing desecrations.
