Dubai: C R Shetty Conferred ‘Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini’ Award

Dubai, Nov 20: C R Shetty, founder of Karnataka Sangh Dubai, current president of Karnataka Sangh Dubai and convener UAE Tulu Koota Dubai, was presented the prestigious ‘Indira Gandhi Priyadarhsini’ award on Wednesday November 19, at the India International Centre Auditrioum, Lodhi Estate, New Delhi, in a glittering ceremony.
The award was established to mark the 91st birthday of late Indira Gandhi, former prime minister of India. The panel consisting of present and former governors of India decides on the recipients every year. This year’s award was presented to 68 achievers in India and only one NRI.
An insurance professional, Chandrashekhar Ram Shetty, resides in Dubai with his wife, son, and daughter.
M C Bhandari, Governor of Orissa, G V G Krishnamoorthy, former election commissioner of India, S Joginder Singh, former CBI director, and other dignitaries were present at the award presentation ceremony.
Speaking to daijiworld.com immediatley after the ceremony, Shetty said ‘I have never worked for awards; but I am delighted that my achievement has been recognized and this is an honour for all Kannadigas in the UAE’.
‘The award is dedicated to the entire team of Karnataka Sangh and UAE Tulu Koota. We have a young and enterprising team in both associations. I owe this award to their teamwork and dedication,’ he said.
Shetty founded the Sangha with like minded people in Dubai in 1985 and mega celebrations are being planned for its 25th anniversary in January 2009. He is also the founder of Tulu Koota Dubai along with late Umesh Nanthoor.
Under the leadership of Shetty, Karnataka Sangh has been involved with various social issues in Dubai as well as back home. Also, under the leadership of Shetty, the Sangha has bagged the Karnataka Rajyostsava award in 2006.
‘Karnataka Sangha and UAE Tulu Koota have several plans to promote talented youth of the community as well as some charitable programmes. Working unitedly for the cause of Kannada and Tulu languages and promoting Tulunadu culture, is always high on our agenda, said Shetty.
