Udupi, Nov 18: In the exciting and well-fought final match of the Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament, Aloy Qatar Team (Mangalore Friends) emerged as undisputed champions after a marathon three sets match with Tatasky-LIC (Sameer Team Kundapur). The scores were 25-16, 40-38 and 25-21. ACT Dubai were the second runners up.
Following the grand inauguration function at St Lawrence PU College Ground 8 pm on Saturday, November 17, the trial match, regular knock out matches commenced from 10.30 pm. A large number of spectators witnessed some of the exciting matches between different teams. Eventually, four teams tried their luck for final in semi-final duel. The first semi-final was between ACT Dubai and Tatasky-LIC in which Tatasky-LIC emerged victorious with 2-0 result. In the second semi-final between Aloy Qatar and Family Friends, Aloy Qatar were victorious with 2-1 scores.
The final match was between Aloy Qatar Team and Tatasky-LIC Team that proved to be long drawn and fiercely contested. While the first set was easily won by Aloy Qatar with 25-16 points, the second set went on for a record 40-38 points. The Aloy Qatar Team scored a stunning victory in the penultimate third set with 25-21 points.
Grand inaugural
Bellevision Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament was inaugurated on Saturday by Commodore Jerome Castelino in the presence of dignitaries and volleyball enthusiasts attending in large numbers.
In his message, Commodore Jerome Castelino complemented the organizing committee for its efforts in organizing such a prestigious tournament which would inspire not only the volleyball lovers but also other sports enthusiasts. He wished well to all the participating teams and success to the entire tournament.
Two other chief guests, Joyline Lobo-International Triple Jump Star and Raison Rebello-International Volleyball player were felicitated by Parish Priest of Moodubelle Fr Clement Mascarenhas for their achievements in sports and games.
Presiding over the inaugural Fr Clement Mascarenhas appreciated the hard work put in by all the committee members under the leadership of Convener Fr Lawrence Cutinha and Coordinator Elias D’Souza. He also thanked all the sponsors and donors. He made an appeal to all the spectators to enjoy the tournament and encourage the players.
Ten volleyball teams participated in the programme.
Valedictory
The valedictory function was held on Sunday at 9.45 am. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Parish Priest of Moodubelle presided over the function. Fr Denis D’Sa, Parish priest of Our Lady of Health Church, Shirva was the chief guest.
In his brief message, Fr Denis D’Sa said that he has witnessed such an exciting State Level Volleyball Tournament in rural area for the first time. He further said that many young persons from rural India have been making mark in the field of sports and games. Sports are the means that unites people of different religions, castes and regions and promotes peace and harmony in the society. He complemented Fr Clement Mascarenhas, Fr Lawrence Cutinha and the entire tournament organising committee for hosting the Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament 2018.
Prizes
Five individual prizes for volleyball players who excelled in different categories were given away by Fr Denis D’Sa. These were: Best Attacker- Anush of Aloy Qatar, Best Passer-Sarafaraz of Aloy Qatar, Best Blocker-Santosh of Family Friends, Best Libro-Ziya of ACT Dubai and Best All-rounder Glavan of Tatasky-LIC.
Medals, Trophy and cash prize of Rs 20,000 for second runners-up Team ACT Dubai were given away by Vincent Fernandes, sponsor of the prize amount.
Similarly, medals, trophy and cash prize of Rs 30,000 were given away by Albert Martis, sponsor of the prize to first runners-up team-Tatasky-LIC.
The first prize with medals, trophy and Rs 50,000 cash were given to the winning team Aloy Qatar by Fr Clement Mascarenhas.
Sr Irene Viegas compered the programme, welcomed the guests and also proposed the vote of thanks.
Lucky draw
The lucky tickets of the raffle draw were picked by Fr Denis D’Sa and Albert Martis. The first prize winning ticket number is 0780 and the second prize winning ticket is 0066.
