Muscat : MCCP's Annual Volleyball -Throwball Tourney

Muscat, Nov 23: Muscat’s Al Wadi Al Kabir ground got its lively life again on Friday, 21st November 2008.  Weather was just fantastic. Slightly warm sunshine with mild breeze was spreading lovely mood into the hearts and minds of sports enthusiasts of the Konkani community of Muscat region. Record number of Mangaloreans, record number of participants and record number of teams were present well before the commencement time to participate and enjoy the Annual Volleyball, Throw ball and Dodge ball tournament. 

The Annual Volleyball for men, Throw ball for ladies and Dodge ball for children was organized by the Mangalorean Catholic Center of the Parish, (MCCP, Sts. Peter & Paul Church – Ruwi) their members on Friday, 21st November 2008 at Muscat Sports Club Grounds, Al Wadi Al Kabir, Ruwi.

“We had a fantastic tournament” says Samuel D’ Silva, main coordinator for sports and finance committees. “It was really great feelings to see many Mangaloreans coming together as one great and united family to participate in a fabulous event of this nature. It was a marvelous sports event in our calendar, we must proudly say. We had record number participants in every category, take it – Volleyball for men, throw ball for ladies and dodge ball for children. We must thank all the MCCP members for their wholehearted participation and support. We are grateful to all of them.” 

The Inaugural function of the tournament commenced with an official welcome address by Donald Fernandes, Sports Secretary of MCCP. Dolly Sequeira, vibrant Sports Secretary of MCCP anchored the formal ceremony. MCCP spiritual Secretary, Hilda Fernandes offered prayers seeking Almighty’s blessings on the tournament. 

Simon D’ Souza,  Finance Controller of Assarain Food Products LLC and supporter of Konkani Community of Muscat was the Chief Guest. Clarence Pinto, President of MCCP, Samuel D Silva – main coordinator of Sports and Finance Committees, Nirmala Goveas – main coordinator of Cultural, Spiritual and Community Services were present during the tournament inaugural function. Simon D’ Souza declared the tournament open by cutting the ribbon.

This was followed by a short felicitation ceremony. The team members represented the Mangalorean community in the Sts. Peter & Paul Church Cultural fiesta 2008 and won the second best place in the competition, were felicitated by Simon D Souza with floral tributes.  The members were main Coordinators of the event Lancy Lobo, Shalet Noronha, director of the presentation - Deepak D’ Souza, Walter Pinto, Walter Mendonca, Flavia D’ Souza, Dilip Correa,  Victor Baptist Pais,   Sunil Lobo,  Melwyn D Souza,  Shalet Noronha,  Philomena Moras,  Leera Aranha, Nancy D Souza, Victoria Pais, Henry Mascarenhas, Benedicta Mascarenhas, Master Brantin Noronha, Master Vitales Pais, Master Dean D’ Souza and Master Lenvil Sequeira.  

During the Ruwi parish cultural fiesta 2008 Konkani community had also presented two scintillating songs composed by eminent composer of the community, Apolinaris D Souza and won the hearts of many audience. These members were also felicitated by Simon D Souza by presenting them with a floral tribute. The singers of the Konkani song were Dolphy Vaz, Lancy Sequeira, Jovita Sequeira, Lanisha Sequeira, Deborah Frank, Ivan Moras,  Anita Lobo and Apolinaris D'Souza..

A sensational dance was presented by the Mangalorean community during the inter-community dance competition held at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Ruwi on 30th October 2008 and won the second runners up trophy. This was also a proud achievement of the community members and hence, the artistes were felicitated by Simon D Souza. The members of the dance team were Deepak D Souza, Amanda Lobo, Jyostna,  Rouben Castelino, Reena Mathias, Melwyn Lobo, Melanie Crasta and Steffi Suares.   

Formation of teams for Volleyball matches for men commenced around 11.15 a.m. There were 12 teams for volleyball. After total thrilling 27 rounds of league, semi-final and final matches, winner trophy was won by Steven Pinto and his team. Michael Goveas and team was the runner up.  Young and brilliant player Praveen D Souza was declared as the Best player of the tournament.

Throwball tournament was equally interesting. Nirmala Goveas and her team presented a powerful play and won the first place while Shanti D Souza’s team secured the runner up position. One of the finest throw ball player of the community, Shaila D’ Souza was declared the player of the tournament for powerful show of the game. Young player of the throw ball tournament – Cheryl Fernandes received a prize of appreciation from the main umpire of the tournament, Suraj Rebello for her great enthusiasm and efficiency in the game.

Dodge ball trophy was won by Ashley D Souza and team and runners up were Shawn Vaz and team.

Jenny Joseph Beauty Parlor (Al Sharaqi Trading) was the major sponsor for the event. Multitech Contracting LLC was the sponsor for the trophies. Evjeen & Helen Sequeira, Sylveter Alva, Vincent Dolly Gomes, Valerian Peres, Jawahar Pinto, Salsabeel – National Mineral Water Co. SAOG, Mumtaz Tea were the other sponsors.           

Omantel is the main sponsor for all MCCP Annual events of 2008 –2009.  

Suraj Rebello, well known activist of the community along with charismatic sports personality of the Mangaloreans in Muscat, Dolly Gomes were the main controllers of the tournament. They were supported by Rony D’ Souza, Hector Pinto, Adrian Saldhana and Cyprian Misquith as the official umpires.

During the prize distribution ceremony, which was conducted by Dolly Sequeira, trophies to the winners were presented by Suraj Rebello, Adrian Saldhana, Dolly Gomes, Cyprian Misquith, Ruben D Souza and Henry Castelino.

Alex Aranha, internal auditor of MCCP, proposed the vote of thanks.

MCCP’s president Clarence Pinto, Main Coordinator Samuel D’ Silva and Sports secretaries, Donald Fernandes and Dolly Sequeira had great support from sports sub-committee members to organize this event. The sub-committee members were Sharmila D Silva, Shanti D Souza, Jane Castelino, Nora Vaz, Ruben D Souza, Richard Mascarenhas and Clifford Castelino.
