Mumbai: Kareena, Amitabh, Sachin are Stamp Duty Defaulters

Mumbai, Nov 26: What do Kareena Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Hirthik Roshan, and Sachin Tendulkar have in common? Apart from being extremely successful, these celebrities also owe the state government several lakh of rupees.
According to the Mumbai Stamp Duty officials, celebrities and production houses collectively owe Rs13 crore to the government towards the stamp duty of the endorsements and advertisement agreement they enter into.

Recent notices sent by the Mumbai Stamp Duty office has nine celebrities, including Kareena Kapoor (Rs5.25 lakh), Amitabh Bachchan (Rs2.60 lakh), Abhishek Bachchan (Rs2.53lakh), Hrithik Roshan (Rs2.80lakh), Deepika Padukone (Rs2.94lakh), Sachin Tendulkar (Rs2.50lakh), Feroz and Fardeen Khan (Rs18,225 each) and Diya Mirza (Rs8,800).
Big production houses like Adlabs (Rs4.13 lakh), Filmcraft (Rs8.05lakh), Mukta Arts (Rs7.46lakh), Yashraj Films (Rs6.84lakh), Red chilly (Rs5.17lakh) have also been sent notices.
Principal secretary of the stamp duty, Ramesh Kumar, said“ “It is not mandatory to register the agreement between the companies and the stars. Hence, we plan to amend the Bombay Stamp Act, 1958, to enable government machinery to recover stamp duty more easil”.”
The office has served notices to 73 celebrities in last two years, out of which 33 have paid the duty.
